Default Dole Vs. Clinton Round 1 - The 60 Minutes Showdown!

Senators' Husbands in Velvet Gloves

Bill Clinton and Bob Dole's discussion on CBS's "60
Minutes" was most notable for its well-honed exchange on
Iraq and taxes.

Did anyone else watch this? I thought is was a great idea, especially at a time like this, where our country is trying to determine its direction. I thought that both candidates spoke well, but that Dole proved his point more effectively. What did you think?

I thought it was brilliantly promoted, no question.

BUT ... were they really any different than anyone expected? I'd like to see some feedback from viewers, like thorugh their web site or something. And I'd like to see something more substantive.

I don't think it broke any new ground at all.

A great Idea yes, but a worthy exchange... I dont think so. The problem is these are two top tier political profiles of the last decade who cant even offer anything now. This is great for ratings initially but after seeing the boring exchange where there was no real debat to appease the intellectuals and no clash of wills to appease the sensationalists their was really nothing worth while in this segment. I tink it is most likely that they will be hanging out in the bar with Phil donahue before too long.

The forum definitely did not break new ground. Since it was a return to a segment that had been used in the past, I din't expect it to groundbreaking.

I think that the exchange was meant to be non-confrontational and friendly. It did not offer juicy barbs or sensationalistic moments, but it did serve its purpose: to promote thought and public debate.

Hopefully it will improve in the weeks ahead, but overall, I think that it was a good start. What would you like to see to improve the debate? Who would you like to see taking part in these debates after Clinton and Dole are done with their run?
