Copying with a tape is also illegal.

yes brooke, laws regarding entertainment have long been written by hollywood. every blank tape you eer bought had a siginificant portionof the cost going to hollywood as royalties. while it never shoudl have been illegal, it was. no one ever said anything b/c quality was poor. now that power is in teh consumers hands, they are frightened that they might have to innovate and lower costs instead of shovelling us the same old schlock at ever higher profit margins. they might have to act like a business. poor souls.

I bought music from iTunes for about a month before I finally got sick of it. I downloaded LimeWire on my other computer, and just transfer the files back and forth. I also use IRC to get files from friends.

I do feel bad about "stealing" the music, though. We are getting music for free, but the artists had to put a lot of time in to produce it. :?

You don't feel bad enough to stop.

in case you missed it, on appeal, the ISP's are no longer required to provide the music co's names of filesharers w/o a subpoena. i use winmx. sure that's bad for some of the artists but i don;t feel bad for britney or justin timberlake. most people work a lot harder than that for less money. most of the money is skimmed off for big artists and the record co's. you'd think with movies setting big records for revenues they'd be a good investment, but you'dbe wrong. the hollywood exec's steal all the profit by lavishing themselves and artists at co. cost and stiffing shareholders. I don't feel abd for them at all. It irks me that they can charge so much for a CD and only b/c they have a monopoly on distribution. until they stop stealing from me, they can bet that people will "steal" from them. and how can you have rights to music pubished by a dead man? can you honestly tell me there woudl be no incentive to produce high quality musis if the rights died with the composer (s)? people complain about the radio but the radi playlists are compiled by record co's pushing their products. i've heard limewire is cool. i also like being able to find rare stuff so easily.

I have a slightly goofy way of buying music. If I hear a song on the radio I like, I'll download some other songs by the artist to see if I might like the entire CD.

If I like the whole thing or at least most of the songs, I'll buy the CD or off of iTunes. If it ends up being just the one song I enjoy, I'll buy the song off iTunes and forget about the rest.

Another thing about iTunes I'm liking is they've worked to get exclusive tracks or live shows from artists. I just bought a live Guster album which is only available through them.

I really think that the RIAA and the music labels are shooting themselves in the foot here. The lawsuits are only driving more file sharing and CD buring.

Okay, I've been hearing about all these people getting in trouble for downloading music, and I haven't actually *read* anything legitimate about it. Can anyone tell me: are there certain bands that are pursuing this or is it downloading in general? Is anyone having this reaction about software or porn off KaZaa?

There are file sharing networks where it's virtually impossible to see who is hosting and or downloading files whether it's software/movies/videos or music. It's not going to go away. Here is a short but thought provoking article on the cold hard economics of it all.

Here is a brief summary of this article by Tim O'reilly.

Anybody taking advantage of the huge Pepis/iTunes promotion where they're giving away 1 million free songs?

I don't drink soda much anymore, but I grabbed a Pepsi today and got a winning cap.
