Only a government as immoral as China's would use the Olympics as an excuse to intensify suppression of Chinese people and worsening its overall human rights record and the persecution of Tibetans, Falun Gong practitioners and Christians. Read Ethan Gutman's extraordinary article from the Weekly Standard for valuable insights on this topic:

If Hitler and the Nazi's got the Olympics, then China has nothing really against it to say that they shouldn't..
Because in the end, all it does is show how the human sprit can overcome anything.... Tho, a boycott would be an intresting thing, as past boycotts has allow nations that never win gold metals a chance to shine: 1980 Olympics(Moscow) Olympics 1984(L.A)

Olympics, Schmolympics. It has become one giant penis competition among countries, and one giant marketing and advertizing campaign for various multi-national companies.
And who really pays attention to many of those sports?! I mean, even badminton has become an Olympic sport now, and besides me, I don't know anyone else who has played serious badminton with an actual racket and a feather shuttle, and indoors in an actual wood-surface court. And why the hell are there dozens and dozens of medals awarded for various versions of swimming?!--In the meantime, you go thru actual tournament and play several games in sports like badminton, tennis, mens field hockey and soccer and all you get is one medal if you're lucky to finish in the top-3. So I say, screw it.

If we had boycotted the 1936 Olympics Jesse Owens would not have had the chance to race and win gold in front of the "supermen". It was a defeat for the Nazis and China should have the same opportunity.

Not that anyone is even watching the opening ceremony right now (ha!),
is it just me or does the "Bird's Nest" stadium look just like a glorious Krispy Kreme doughnut? China REALLY loves unison, like, seriously.....(Or is it all that communism.....) Will all the Olympic trinkets and doo-dads be inherently lead-based? Ironically enough, they will be "Made In China". Random thoughts. It's Friday night.

Olympics Schmolympics. It is one huge privately run party (who does IOC answer to?) that goes every 4 years to a city that is mad enough to agree to spend billions of public tax dollars for the benefit of being the host. Frankly, the whole thing has become a vast media circus and I don't give two hoots about it, one way or another.
BTW, the magazine Foreign Policy covered this whole China Olympics issue from all the various aspects, even economic. Turns out, national economies of host nations take a nose dive in the year following hosting Olympics; makes sense, because you spend so much effort erecting new infrastructure, you can't possibly have more the following year. It also often diverts resources away from other needs. It is truly amazing how so much of the foreign media and the foreign governments cow-tows to China and sweeps its "problems" under the proverbial rug.
