WARNING: VERY GRAPHIC PHOTOS
Yes this is the real Iraq War, not the filtered and watered down crap you get on the TV and in the papers- http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feat...ry/index1.html |

The partisan bickering really doesn't change anything (other than voting in Nov.)
BTW, not many people have gotten to see the graphic photos taken in Afghanistan, a war that is popularly supported. I'm certain it's no less disturbing.

I'm just so glad we can all keep this debate civil, reasonable, and mature.

It would be quite a sight just to have seen the steady stream of coffins clad in red, white, and blue, landing at your friendly neighborhood airbase, from the far-off wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Bush Jr, or rather his handlers, knew the visual effect such a truth would have, so they simply banned most such video and photographic footage from ever being shown on your nightly news. Americans were happily buying their newest iPods and other gimmicks. While minding the special "orange" level of alert against terror, of course.
As for Iraqi casualties... well, who wants to count those, when we can happily point to the "thousands" that Saddam killed himself, keep pointing the finger, you see. "see, we went there to get rid of a tyrant who killed his own people. gased them. genocide. dirty war." By the time you have anything to say about that, the issue of how many Iraqis got butchered, killed, maimed by the American pillage of that far-off land, is brushed aside. And even after that, if someone has the stones to raise the issue of Iraqi casualties, quickly point to the American lives lost on 9/11, as if you know, the innocent Iraqi who just became fodder of American bullet had anything to do with 9/11. Or worse, it's easy to point to "They are just killing themselves! It is a shitty fratricide out there, and not Americans' fault." So there! There is always an out. The victors write the history, and they never paint themselves in bad light.

I don't think the no-tape order was issued directly from G.W. Bush, not to allow photographers videotape flag-draped coffins heading out to the air bases.
That probably came from some idiot at the Pentagon--and done in the name of "national security" as it would reveal something like troop levels, et. al. [you know how silly military commanders can be at justifying orders]

As I recall, it was a political order, done to "protect" the military honor and to stop a media "circus".
It is from this time that programs like the Nightline (under Ted Koppel) and PBS' NewsHour started to have nightly moments of silence in respect of the new list of military dead. As a sign of thumbing it to the administration.

Why don't you too enlighten us on the realities of war from your own experiences in combat? Do you have any? Thought not. Sorry, but photos and video are the only things civilians have that come close to even capturing what war is really like. They are much much more powerful than words and mere descriptions. |
