Bridgestone/Firestone is sponsoring this year's Super Bowl, that advertising vehicle thinly disguised as a sporting event. The article linked below discusses that company's atrocious human/labor rights record in Liberia.

You know,
If you posted a more neutral source like this http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/...,3158608.story Where both sides present their argument, we can have a much better debate. Not that I am saying I agree with Firestone, but what is the deal with people using .org's for all their sources on here? I mean come on? www.commondreams.org? That site is full of whiners and never says what it can do better, just complains. Last edited by Towelie : 01-30-2008 at 09:18 AM. |

I'm assuming people are developing enough internet savvy that they can make those decisions for themselves. You were able to find that LA Times piece, which is cited in one of the comments to the piece I posted. The piece I posted was an opinion piece, clearly. Opinion pieces vary in quality. I think that piece is probably very accurate, especially since I've been following this issue (somewhat) for some time, but I don't think its my duty to provide an exhaustive analysis of this or any issue when I post. If people bring other information to the thread, that's great, and that's actually kind of the point. If I had posted the commondreams link with the message, "This is all you need to know about this topic," then maybe you would have a point. But I'm not that simpleminded.
Oh, and Tim K, thanks for your intelligent contribution to this thread. |

Firestone has been operating in Liberia for over 100 years, and like any multi-national company, it is only interested in profit...nothing new here...it actually provided somewhat stable jobs in that nation before the political turmoil that started in the late 80's...Now, on to the Super Bowl itself...
it is the 'crown jewel' of the corrupt cartel/combination of the NFL/Las Vegas/Alchohol manufactures/distributors/TV and all the 'offshore' companies that sell NFL merchandise...you can't even watch 5 continous minutes of a football game anymore without being interrupted by a stream of obnoxious commercials...football, as it's presented today, is a human rights violation...so, what's new?...enjoy multi-millionaire Tom Petty recycling his hits for a big payday at halftime! |
