RAWALPINDI, Pakistan -- Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, a party aide and a military official said.

"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was taken after the attack.

A senior military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment, confirmed that Bhutto had died.

Her supporters at the hospital began chanting "Dog, Musharraf, dog," referring to Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf. Some of them smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears.

I don't think it was a bomb; the AP report is now saying she was shot in the throat and chest, and the killer then killed himself. 20 others died as well so there may also have been a bomb. Just horrible.

It may have been both. Regardless, further chaos will ensue.

RAWALPINDI, Islamabad — An attack on a political rally killed the Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto near the capital, Islamabad, Thursday. Witnesses said Ms. Bhutto was fired upon before the blast, and an official from her party said Ms. Bhutto was further injured by the explosion, which was apparently caused by a suicide attacker.

Troubled times ahead for our most volatile, historically Taliban supporting "ally", home of Osama bin Laden and co.

Although her tenure as PM was dogged by corruption charges, some real, some politically motivated, she was an incredibly popular voice for a more secular path forward for Pakistan. Her murder will likely bring more chaos and violence.

She should have kept the guards Musharraf had on her.

I really don't think that the Guard would have helped.

The Bhutto family has suffered many times over... execution of her father... death of her brother...
along with the fact that as the first moslem woman to run a country then to be deposed so fervently under corruption scandals.

Sad day really... there are those who never liked her... not due to corruption... but to the fact that she was TOO Western in thinking, and a woman.

Her recent return in to politics, was a bright flickering hope for western democracy in the region. That is now sadly extinguished.
