Challenge:

I'd like to see testing done on toys from five, ten, and fifteen years ago to see what type of paint and so forth is on them. I'm skeptical that this is a new thing.[/quote]

Just thought I'd mention here that about 30 years ago, my daughter's Curious George doll was recalled for having lead paint used to spell out "Curious George" across the doll's chest. I don't know if this was a product from China, but this is one of the same dolls now being recalled for the same crap!! What gives? Oh, and by the way, what kind of manufacturing company, in any country, (other than Pharmacuetical) doing with Rohypnol anywhere near their assembly line? You want a conspiracy theory? Try perhaps a global pedophile ring. Or maybe the cute little kids forced to work in these factories are so doped up with roofies themselves, that they're adding anti-freeze to the toothpaste!! Sounds like a cry for help to me.

Believe it or not, someone out there does do it.

My wife sold some stuff on ebay. One item was an old winnie the pooh bear on a wagon. Within a few hours it was kicked off the site. When she inquired as to why it was removed, she got a form email back saying that the item is not allowed to be sold on ebay since it contains harmful paints, solvents, or lacquers.

If that is true, then it's evidence that our government has allowed harmful products to benefit Capitalists, but down use the products as a threat to defend the position of Capitalists from China. It has nothing to do with children's safety.

How many trillions of dollars of trade do we do with China every year? And we get, what, a half dozen product recalls?

GM has a worse safety record than that, it just doesn't get media coverage.

Are you saying GM cars are painted with lead?

i don't want to perturb anyone, but i just posted on a China-related thread just now, which seems older than this one.....but this one seems more political, so i will say this.....

...about China not caring about what they put into their products or how they make them, aren't they rooted in Communism? Aren't they, by nature, just scraping by with whatever they are given to make stuff however way they can (hence the slave labor, should ring a bell to us Americans...that's another blog ) with their government pocketing whatever the US and other economies have given them towards having products made for them?

It's no wonder things are so crude over there.....and we are so suckered over here. American names are all over these various products synonymous with classic American life. The integrity (if there is any) of these big names are at risk because of this vicious cycle our government engaged in to get items cheaper, faster laying off our modestly (compared to the rut of China's workers) paid workers to pay the Chinese crumbs.....

.....Is China trying to kill us? Maybe.....but is the US helping in a sick, sadistic way? Did we teach them how to treat us? Who wins at being greedy and diabolical - US or China.......meanwhile, whose people lose the most - the family of the kid who can't get that Bratz doll for Christmas because of a lead recall in its fake collagen lips OR the family of the kid in China who made it?

It was not rohypnol in the assembly line. They replaced 1,5-pentanediol with 1,4-butanediol which becomes ghb when metabolized.

1,4-butanediol is used to make cleaning products, and is not meant for kid's toys. It was used as a replacement since it costs about a 1/5 of the safe stuff. No conspiracy theory-it just comes down to greed.

Greed is the worst, as it always ends up killing someone...

Indeed, this has nothing to do with China.
