Default Chinese goods sub-par

How many Chinese imported items have been recalled so far? Lets racap shall we:

1:Most recently....the toy company Mattel recalled 1.5 million toys. The toys were made by a contract manufacturer in China that used a non-approved paint pigment containing lead. Lead paint has been linked to health problems in children, including brain damage.

2: 450,000 Chinese-made tires.

3: Toothpaste that contains diethylene glycol (DEG)

4: Various pet foods containing melamine. (Being a pet owner myself this one irritates me the most....)

5: Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway toys...1.5 million recalled because of lead paint.

6: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has placed a hold on five types of farmed fish and seafood containing traces of antifungal and antibiotic drugs that are potentially harmful to humans. Federal officials said that repeated tests on shrimp, catfish, eel, basa and dace imported from China revealed the presence of drugs not approved in the United States for use in farmed seafood.

I wonder what will be recalled next? Sure those imported Chinese made goods are cheap cheap and Americans love a good cheaply made product....but is it worth all the heartache?

Wonder how many ingredients in our processed foods/drink originate in the fair country of China--and what are the circumstances under which they are produced? Who knows what are are consuming, having our children play with, slathering on our skin, and wearing, truthfully.

At least our inspection standards are somewhat more responsible then Chinas. I read somewhere that they said that China is a "devolving country" and dosent have the necessary facilities for testing etc.....pretty sad if you ask me.

Default Chinese Junk

For anyone browsing those pretty shelves of electronics in Walmart, Target, Circuit City, etc.. When you think that "pretty-looking" feature-filled stereo, clock radio, television, etc is what you want, just remember you'll probably never see the INSIDE of it, and how crappy the Chinese have constructed it... unless of course, you throw it against the wall when it acts up, and see it shatter. They're taking our money and handing us JUNK in return. What you THINK may be a bargain really isn't, when you're out spending MORE money to replace the CRAP that just didn't last long.

i'm glad someone started this thread already, it needed to be addressed.....questions:

with all this "Made in China" paranoia, especially now at the threshold of the holiday season, should we be (cut and paste, and answer what/if you choose):

A) scared (to eat "Chinese" (not like that, or maybe, you tell me), buy Chinese-made products for ourselves and our kids.....is it all bad and tainted as being claimed? who dropped the ball on this one?)

B) annoyed (about all the media coverage for when the "next" item gets recalled...so much for my trader joe's organic frozen mixed veggies.....thanks, nydia han on 6ABC for breaking that one)

C) inspired (to buy "American"....why is it that "American-made" products are NOT as easily available or accessible as China-originated brands (with American-company names)on store shelves? Why is buying American mainly just an online destination?

D) suspicious (why NOW, all of a sudden, Chinese-made products, as well as other (NOT ALL) foreign-made products are under public scrutiny and being publically stoned? This isn't new....what is the media and/or government up to......where does the blame fairly begin for all this hysteria/attention?

and

E) Pissed Off at American companies who outsource to China because of profit and for failing to screen their products for quality. Remember, Not all, but many of the goods in question are not products from Chinese companies. They are products of American companies who outsourced the production to Chinese factories.

how about that.....i just thought about that and mentioned it in the other China thread, like aren't we (America) contributing to this fiasco? Would the Chinese, at least the well-to do members of China, accept certain products into their homes, knowing that the parts alone aren't even quality to begin with, then the craftsmanship is rushed and thrown together, then the "finishing touches" , i.e. paint jobs laced with lead, preservatives in food, etc.....? No wonder Wal-Mart dropped the smiley face from their commercials.......there's nothing to smile about with those "always low prices"

i know you meant "crowded".....and no, the "well-to do" people in China I was referring to, at least, are a growing minority of folks, urban professionals, if you will, somehow capitalizing on all this trade and business opportunities opening up for them and the few others that are college-educated.

A while back i saw a documentary on WYBE showing Chinese Americans, roughly 25-40 folk, who for one reason or another, were working and living in China for a few years at a time. Some worked pre-89/Tienemen Square, and many in the 90's, and they noted the changes in the culture, some for the better, many for the worse. Issues like people trading in their cars for unregulated cars that produce some of the worst toxins in the world per square mile, and the upcoming 2008 Olympics in Beijing, changing many of the traditional customs and conversational things into English-friendly communication, although many say intended meanings to things are being lost in translation just to accommodate Westerners.....

..... Many brought up similar issues that we are having here in Philly actually - the real estate boom that brought with it an insurgence of condos so overpriced that they don't have enough folks willing to put down the bucks to fill them, like here. Some of these condos are springing up in what were once "blighted" neighborhoods, some neighborhoods, although working poor, were completely bulldozed for many of these condos and office space that to this day remain overpriced and unused waste of space.
