Default Chavez pushes constitutional reforms in Venezuela

The article's in Spanish, but here are some of the more controversial proposed changes:
  • Allow the government to hold monopolies on private property (e.g. the gov. could decide that all grocery stores should be government owned)
  • Gives the government power to take private property if it "affects the wellbeing of a third party" (one could interpret that in quite a few ways, I assume it's "social justice" related -- and you thought eminent domain was bad)
  • Remove the right to keep journalistic sources anonymous
  • Gives the gov. the right to take news media off the air if it doesn't follow certain rules (I guess this just makes it easier to do so, since the gov. already took RCTV off the air)
  • Erodes academic and physical autonomy of institutions of higher learning (I.e. universities)
  • Creates "Communal Councils" under the National Assembly that would have the authority to remove mayors and other local elected officials from power without a recall referendum
  • Restrict voting rights of foreign nationals who have been living in the country for at least 10 years (they are currently allowed to vote).

Some of that sounds like good communism, but some of it sounds like the bad stuff too. If stupid power mongers get in control of positive people through the councils, then you'll have nothing new.

I hope they don't screw it up.

Just wait until someone assassinates him. We will be blamed for it I am sure.

I wouldn't have used the word "reforms" to describe what Chavez is doing.

I have to say this is a very puzzling post.
Can you give an example of "good communism", a country that's ever been successful with it?

to me, it's just curious that hawkish Americans (read: Republicans) are so damn annoyed with Chavez and never waste any opportunity to tar him and call him out on anything and everything. he's like the pet dictator, a new pet project that needs to be killed, a la Saddam Hussein.

nevermind that America has dealt with and continues to deal with guys like Chavez all the time when it suits the supposed American interests.

in which case, all the talk about "democracy in Venezuela" and such is really moralistic bullshit, so of course, if Chavez is assasinated tomorrow, it would be blamed on the CIA or any implicit or explicit American hand.

I'm glad Jimmy Carter did away with allowing assasinations of foreign leaders, however "undemocratic" they may seem to American leadership of the time.
