Default More US jobs going south of the border

HERSHEY CO. RESTRUCTURES
Layoff talk fills air with uncertainty
Hershey workers, community fear local plant losses
Friday, February 16, 2007
BY DANIEL VICTOR
Of The Patriot-News

It is what The Hershey Co. didn't say about its planned job cuts that generated so much angst and fear among the blue-collar workers who make the candy.

The company yesterday announced that 1,500 jobs will be cut within three years, but workers don't know which ones. The company said it will build a plant in Mexico.

The workers who make the candy that helps define the region's identity described the mood inside Derry Twp. plants yesterday as tense or fearful.

"Nobody knows nothing," said George Lehman, who has been with the company for 27 years, after finishing his shift in wrapping. "It's all just hearsay."

Kay Brown, also ending her shift in wrapping, said the news made it difficult to keep up with a busy day in the plant.

"That's all I'm hearing about," she said.

The Hershey Co. hasn't said which plants could see a reduction in positions. A company spokesman said some plants will be expanded, some will be downsized and some will be closed.

The company scheduled a meeting at 7 a.m. today at the Hershey Theatre for the employees of the 19 E. Chocolate Ave. plant. Workers at the Reese's plant were gathered early yesterday, but one worker said officials did not answer a series of questions.

Dennis Bomberger, business manager of Chocolate Workers Local 464, said he's worried that local plants could be closed.

"You can just hope it's not going to be the ones here," he said.
Pretty sad if you ask me.

It seems that if the jobs dont go overseas, then the jobs are being taken right here from those from elsewhere.

Why don't Americans cry when Toyota builds a plant here? Boo hoo, poor Japanese blue collar workers. Nobody is lining up to buy rediculously priced American made products either. Comparitive advantage works out in the long run. People with few or antiquated skills get hurt, but so did all the blacksmiths who made horseshoes when cars became popular.

Jobs only get taken from people if someone else can do a better job, or the same job for less. My suggestion is to get the skills to ensure that your boss isn't going to be able to find someone who can do your job as well as you can. Either that, or get used to a smaller paycheck.

Oh brother. Almost everyone from "right here" is from elsewhere.

Yet another typical Cerberus thread.

Typical huh? I am far from typical Why dont you bring some debate to the table instead of sitting on the sidelines?

Im pretty glad they canst send my job south of the border....how secure is yours?

Its pretty sad that something that has been part of the fabric of this country for so many has to be sent to Mexico to be produced.. I wonder if they will build a HERSHEY park in Mexico City?

I wish we could outsource our political workforce because we all know they have bloated paychecks

I try my best.... I know all of my work clothes are American made....even my boots. I even found a pair of sneakers made here in the good ol USA! Its getting harder everyday and eventually there will be nothing made in the USA....

A little effort on the consumers part would prevent issues like this from happening but then again most Americans will go for the lowest priced product regardless of where it is produced.

Default American made flags! Thats just asinine!

Actually made in the USA: Bill would prohibit foreign-made flags

I remember last year I read an article in the Inqy that had to do with some Mexican protests in Cali....and I had noticed one thing that made me laugh:

This image shows a woman holding a Mexican flag....but where was it made?

MADE IN CHINA!

I wouldn't change my tune, but I would change my job. It sucks when people lose their jobs, but thats the way it is. Some skills get outdated in some societies. There are probably at least a few hundred people in the Philly metro area that could do my job, but many of them already employed. I'm not too worried that an illegal is going to take away my research projects. If someone does, and there aren't any more jobs in my field, I'll learn how to do something else. Just like the coopers and cordswaines and sail makers and horseshoers. Progress hurts, but it is good in the long run.

So your clothes are made in the U.S.? Where was the fabric maufactured. Your clothes were probably assembled here by immigrants with foreign sewing machines in real American sweatshops. The company that make the sewing machines probably uses American software and the fabric factory probably banks and invests with American companies, at least indirectly.

I'm glad that someone with shortsighted, uninformed arguments wants to send my job to Mexico. You, the blacksmiths and the candy wrappers can run the country and I'll soak up some rays on the beach. I'd be happy to work in Mexico. They have internet connections and telephones there and my job doesn't require a big, belching factory.

The more I think about this the more p*ssed off I get. My father lost his semi-skilled manual labor job last month. He's been laid off before, but this one looks permanent. The 1950s plant he worked in for years is obsolete (and trust me I know, I worked there for a while too before deciding that I had better get an education). So now he is nearing his 60th birthday with no job and bills to pay.

But my father isn't bitter and he isn't boohooing to the local paper. Now that he's collecting unemployment (something that he hates to do) he's learning how to work with mentally handicapped adults. It seems that residential facilities for the mentally challanged need burly types for when the residents get out of control. My father is smart and patient (he's put up with me for all these years) so I think it's a great match. I know it will be a hell of a lot better than "the plant" (as we all affectionately call it). Instead of a knee jerk, nativist, protectionist responce, he figured out what he could do about his situation.

A friend's father lost his job at a factory due to outsourcing several years ago and again, no boohooing. He got a commercial truck driver's license and a job that paid much much more than the factory ever would. People who are capable and driven will usually land on their feet. People who feel a sense of entitlement because they are American are going to get the shaft.
