Oil is fungible so the source doesn't really matter. However, Venezuela owns Citgo, so boycotting Citgo reduces the amount of money going to Chavez. Middle Eastern countries own no chains that I know of.

Boycotting CITCO isn't going to hurt Chavez because he could just hold on to the oil until the price goes up and he can get more money at that time. If it makes you feel better fine, but you could do more by just checking the air in your tires.

Unfortunately the current state of Venezuela is the fault of several decades of financial mismanagement by the country's ruling elite. Venezuela is a wealthy country, yet over 80% of the population lives in poverty. The infrustructure there has also been left to rot while oil profits were basically stolen by the politicians. In a situation like this, Chavez looks like a good alternative to the masses. Unfortunately, he's headed down the road to becoming a President for Life.
P.S. on a lighter note In my head I can envision airlifts to get the Miss and Mr Venezuela contestants wisked out of the country to safe haven in Miami. |

I don't buy my gas from Citgo for this very reason. Every time I hear that commercial, '...from your good friends in Venezuela...' I just want to throw up!!
Someone mentioned that this country (I assume you meant the US, not Venezuela) has been successfully printing money for a long time now. Were you being sarcastic? Because our money is worth crud, and the more they print, the more worthless it becomes. The day this country went off the gold standard was the day it started taking it's slow decline into economic insignificance. |
