Recently saw a piece on genocide going on right now in Sudan - with 1 million muslims being killed, raped, pushed off their lands, etc. by Sudanese tribal government.
Not a word from the U.S. Not much from the U.N. I wonder. Is the silence because they are Muslims . . . or is it because they are black and African.

The media corporate bosses have decreed that Africa is to be accorded as little attention
as possible. Corpmed's ignoring of the Sudanese conflict is mirrored in Chad, where it is the arabs who are killing black Christians. There is also the persecution of white farmers in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Blood thirsty tyrant Mugabe of Zimbabwe recently decreed that all whites and asians must leave the country by 2005. None of this gets much mainstream media attention. There is a reason for corpmed's silence. Flying under the radar throughout the mineral-rich continent are dozens of Western companies raking in millions. All they have to do is split the booty with the dictators and they are given a free hand. A case in point is the right-wing religious fanatic Pat Robertson. During the Liberian crisis last year it came to light he was in the diamond business big time with strong man Charles Taylor. The corporate media keeps all of this quiet because they receive a cut from these Western corporate raiders. |

But we've seen lots of stories on the farmers being attacked in Zimbabwe. Perhaps, because they are white?
Also, I've seen a number of stories on Chad, again perhaps because the killers there are Muslims and the victims are Christians. None of it is on the scale, however, of what is happening in the Sudan. It is projected that more than 1 million people have fled and could well die - genocide on a massive scale.

Humanitarian ideals are not high on corporate media's agenda. To them those millions are just useless eaters. When you get into the details of what the New World Order analysts are about, you find that overpopulation always figures at the top of what is problematic for them.
But your point is correct. There is an anti-Muslim bias in the Western media. No surprises there. |

You guys better check your facts...
It's the non-muslim groups that are getting slaughtered by the SPLA and other, mostly islamic tribal regimes. Some figures show nearly 100,000 killed by these government factions every year. Millions of tons of humanitarian aid (mostly US as well as UN), are donated per year though much of that gets swiped up by the local regimes and the SPLA. These same animals have been known to mow down their own people to steal the food and in turn sell it on the black market. It's an ignorant statement to say this is a case of anti-muslim sentiment when the majority of the victims are not even muslim. I have mentioned before that my Aunt and Uncle have taken in 7 Sudanese refugees, given them all an education (two are now even in college) and a roof over their head. The love and admiration that those 7 have for my aunt and uncle (as well as others they come in contact with) is profound. I witnessed this first-hand when I gave two bags full of clothing to the oldest that is around my height. He had tears in his eyes. These people are perhaps the most undemanding most un-selfish people I know. If anyone wants to sit down and have a conversation that will COMPLETELY alter their perceptions of themselves and the rest of the world I am certain that I could arrange this with them. No one, myself not withstanding, realizes the luxuries of this country unless they see it through the eyes of another. |

We need to check our facts? You need to read posts with more attention. Both Chris and I acknowledged the large-scale slaughter of Christians by Muslims in Africa. Of course in Sudan the Muslims are going to strike back and kill Christians. There is killing on both sides. That's what makes it a conflict.
I said: "the Sudanese conflict is mirrored in Chad, where it is the arabs who are killing black Christians." Chris said: "Also, I've seen a number of stories on Chad, again perhaps because the killers there are Muslims and the victims are Christians." |

Elf,
You may be correct. I clearly can not make assumptions based on the entire population of Sudan based on the testimony of 7 individuals. Mine are experiences which are based solely off of those that themselves experienced these struggles first-hand. Above and beyond that, its hard to find positive news coming out of the entire continent of Africa these days as most of it is overrun with Civil War and/or famine. JS |
