How about splitting the difference and living in Delaware? That's the most pragmatic solution.

I believe you would have to take Amtrak if you went by train from Philadelphia. We're quite lucky to be on the Northeast Corridor route from DC to Boston - probably the best train route in the country. They sell monthly passes and it's not too bad since the seats are comfortable and you can work. I have a friend who lives near Johns Hopkins and comes up to Philadelphia several times a week. I also have a number of friends and colleagues who do the commute from NYC every weekday and they have adjusted fine. It's possible but do you want to do this every weekday for years and years? That's the question.

Oh, if you choose to go the Amtrak route, I would take into account that you have to get to 30th St. Station - not a problem for people coming in and working at Penn, but might be a pain getting there from different parts of the city.

Where's Eldondre?

I would guess that the commute is doable but not awfully convenient. I agree that it might be most convenient to move to Wilmington - there are some nice areas near the river (either). I have a cousin who lives down there (near the ballpark) and works in CC. After seveal years of Manayunk, he loves Wilmington. I don't know how it would work to Baltimore.

Regardless, it's going to be a tough commute for someone. Don't know where you live here . . . and whether your husband would have to take buses, subways, cabs, etc. to get to 30th Street.

My husband took Amtrak from Richmond( same distance philly to baltimore, and I don't know that public trans in baltimore is as good as DC) to DC for almost 2 months until we moved into our N. VA home. I found the cost remarkabley low because he purchased monthly passes. However, we would never have considered living 2 hours away from his workplace. His commute door to door was 2 1/2 hours each way, and frankly, I want to see my man more than 2 hours a day and it really was a burden for him dedicating his work week soley to work. It's a quality of relationship decision, in my view.

Sheesh... I commuted an hour from Tacony to Trooper each day and my wife complained. I can't imagine 2 hours... she'd rather have me working at Wal-Mart if the job 2 hours away was the only one I could get in my field. lol And I'm too dedicated. I'd leave hours late and still have to face that commute home. :-\

Well, good luck on this decision. I think moving to Wilmington was a very good idea. You should consider that.

I commute an hour and a half to two hours a day by either car or bus/train/train/bus to central jersey to work, and I survive.

But I can work from home every now and then, and do sometimes stay late some days to leave early others.

You either live near work, or live near were you want to be.

Many people live in the mountains to bike, ski, look at mountain stuff and drive 2 to 2 1/2 hours to NYC or may live at the Shore and drive to Philly. Who gets paid more, or has the better shot at getting a job in a new location. Or if you love the South Philly life likes me just do the right thing.

I've never seen his house. Walter is a late 30s, geologist with Atochem and travels considerably. His office is in Philadelphia but he's on the road a bit. My understanding is that his home is near I-95, the stadium, and a park along the river. Row house.

Don't know how diverse the area is - he's a mid-aged professional educated at William & Mary - doubt if he is too far right or left (he seems pretty bland to me) but I can't imagine that he would be offended by much.

He didn't want to move back to Manayunk because he didn't like all the kids living six to a house, etc.

The closest you'll find is a neighborhood called "Girard Estate", and Girard Park, which is just west of Broad, and a couple blocks north of I-76.
Queen Village/Bella Vista near I-95 around Washington might be close enough, but could be out of the price range.
