Default Job hunt advice

hello all,

i recently relocated here from los angeles and am currently looking for work. i'm wondering if anyone could offer some advice on good resources on the web, print, etc. to look for work in the area. i'm 26 and graduated from loyola marymount in los angeles in 2000 with a b.a. in music of all things, but have been working in the area of web, graphic and print design and event planning for the past few years. i'd greatly appreciate any input all of you friendly people could offer.

many thanks,

michael

This would be a good place for the "Planting Tulips" joke, but I'll pass.

Well, I'd suggest you take a look at all of the local university/college websites, first and foremost the Penn jobs site:

https://jobs.hr.upenn.edu/applicants...=1089159954179

Penn, being the largest private employer in the city, has a little something for everyone, I daresay. But also try:

Bryn Mawr
Haverford
Swarthmore
Temple
Lasalle
University of the Arts
Philadelphia University
Community College of Philadelphia
Rutgers University Camden

Not a lot of openings at any one place, but there are a lot of schools in the area that look for people with IT or web skills, I think.

I work at Penn, so it's what I always think of first. Others will chime in with other options, I imagine.

The redo dropped the Job Hunting forum, alas, which had a lot of good info in it.

Here's some ideas:

National Job sites with decent Philly content:
http://www.monster.com
http://www.careerbuilder.com (Inquirer partners with them: Inky portal to CB is: http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/cla...ds/employment/ )

Local sites - there is a http://www.phillyjobs.com - not sure how good it is.
http://philadelphia.craigslist.com - craig's list use is definitely growing in Philly.

My particular experience/expertise lies in non-profit jobs - here are some places that I've either listed or found jobs in the Philly NPO sector:

http://www.philaculture.org/jobs/job.cfm - Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance Job Bank. The resource for arts and culture jobs in the region. Disclaimer: I work for the Alliance, but used the Job Bank extensively before working there.

http://www.lasallenonprofitcenter.or...oblistings.htm - LaSalle Nonprofit Center Nonprofit Nexus - super lame Web version of their print jobs newsletter. Good listings, lousy "interface".

http://www.idealist.org - Int'l nonprofit resource site, including excellent job listings service, which is getting more and better Philly postings.

http://www.opportunityknocks.org - Nat'l nonprofit job site, formerly affiliated with LaSalle, so the brand is pretty well built up in the Philly NPO community, and so there are still a lot of Philly listings.

Hope that helps.

I have done lots of job searches for people who didn't have Internet access or even computers and there are a good many resources out there both online and off. However there is no secret here. You have to apply and apply and apply until you get the/a job. Even though you have a specific area that you want to get into it may become necessary for you to get a job before you can get the kind of job you want.

Regarding web design and event planning - Do you want to do this as your own business or do you want to work in this kind of capacity for someone else? The routes you take will vary on the answer you give.

It's often said that getting a job is a job in and of itself and this is how you should treat it. While there are many online resources to help you don't do just that. To put it bluntly you'll have to pound that pavement. Apply anywhere that you are qualified for. Even if its just to file an application a lot of people have said that they have gotten jobs this way because something came up where the company had to hire someone. People leave, quit, get promoted etc and its better to have your application on file than not having one of file.
