Default Sleep Solutions Aids National Sleep Apnea Program

A story in the Sunday, January 30, 2005 Conroe (TX) Courier (see the full story at http://snipurl.com/cekz). Dr. Stephen Farber, a cardiologist with Lone Star Family Practice, explained his frustrations when prescribing a sleep study for one of his patients, only to hear the sleep study was rejected outright. The story concerning him reads:

Quote:
Dr. Stephen Farber, a cardiologist, said he was concerned that necessary testing would not be allowed by the district.

After ordering a sleep apnea test for one of his cardiology patients, Farber said he was told the test and treatment were not covered by the hospital district.

"I'm concerned when a test I order for a potentially dangerous disease is turned down," Farber said."

It is because of similar frustrations that physicians, and perhaps more importantly, the individuals, around the country felt when being denied coverage like this, that Awake In America is pleased to be able to say it is now in a position to help people like Dr. Farber and his patient.

Sleep Solutions Aids National Sleep Apnea Program

SSI joins Awake In America to provide access to free sleep apnea testing services

ANNAPOLIS, MD., January 31, 2005 -- An estimated 18 million Americans are affected by Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) a sleep-breathing disorder characterized by partial or complete blockage of the airway during sleep. The condition is often characterized by snoring, choking and constant interruptions to peaceful sleep.

Associated with obesity, daytime sleepiness, high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke, sleep apnea is a growing national concern. Research indicates untreated sleep apnea may cause over $15 billion in additional medical costs.

In response to the growing number of adults needing access to affordable testing for OSA, Sleep Solutions has announced a new grant program in association with Awake In America to provide free diagnostic testing services to qualified individuals who are without sufficient financial or insurance resources.

"Traditional sleep studies to diagnose apnea can cost up to $2,500 per test," said David F. Jackson, the national coordinator for Awake In America. "Some patients travel long distances, take time off from work, and, in the case of two-night sleep studies, they and their family face transportation, hotel, and meal expenses."

Sleep Solutions will donate its clinically-validated at-home testing services in support of Awake In America's "xPAP Donation and Relief Program", designed to accelerate the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. The organization's comprehensive initiative is aimed at helping individuals with limited resources obtain essential equipment to treat sleep apnea. Details of the program may be found at http://www.AwakeInAmerica.org/DonateRelief.

"We are proud to donate our services in support of Awake In America," said Michael J. Thomas, President and CEO of Sleep Solutions, Inc. "This program presents another opportunity to help men and women understand the risks of sleep apnea and to get tested if the symptoms appear. The donations we are making will help even more people with this serious condition."

"This grant of diagnostic services from Sleep Solutions is important in helping us help many more people who are suffering from sleep apnea," said Dave Jackson. "SSI's responsive donation will allow us to provide diagnostic services to those in need. We are very appreciative of their generosity and support."
