The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is attempting to implement a new rule that would reduce mercury emissions from PA Power Plants by 90%. However, industry has pressured some legislators to introduce legislation that would prevent Pennsylvania from adopting this strong rule in favor of a weaker federal rule.
We have great posters made up that will grab people's attention and get them to take action on this important issue. Volunteers can help by hanging them up at public places (libraries, rec centers, bulletin boards) anywhere in the 5-county area. For more information on the Mercury rule, check out www.pennfuture.org |

I can't paste it here, but if you send me a private message with your email address I can send it to you.
This is a critical time for this issue because the Senate just voted to approve a bad piece of legislation on mercury so we need to put pressure on the House right now. Thanks! |

www.pennfuture.org deserves allot of credit but until I see our pollution numbers go down, allot more needs to be done now. Its not just mercury pollution in our lakes and air. Its particulates and co2 and diesel. We may have some victories but unfortunately we are in a polluted area. We need allot more but give thanks for pennfuture efforts. I am definitely not so optimistic though

Hmm...I always kinda figured dumb kids were a good way to solve our cheap labor problems. Maybe if we skip the posters we could kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Cheap energy and cheap labor. (ok...i'm a bit tipsy in writing this I'm sure I'll think thats an aweful idea in the morning. Right now it makes me giggle)

Thanks for recognition of PennFuture and many other organization's work on this issue. Pollution is clearly a problem we won't solve overnight, but unless we tackle one piece at a time, we'll never see progress. I'd urge you to take action rather than give into pessimism. Too many people think they can't make a difference, but that attitude is exactly what keeps them from being heard.

I never even knew your oganization existed. I give you credit for getting intelligent well meaning people together to help our families breathe and live in non polluted environment. I think like I stated so often in newsgroups and in some form here on these threads, that clean air is often the difference between longevity and quality of life and to me this is the most important thing living in this area , not whether I have my roads correctly maintained. However its hard to blame people for not caring if they don't know of the ramifications this air does to people over time. The only thing I pleaded with gov. officials and epa was at least do the studies to show how dangerous we have it compared to clean air states. I would like to know the exact calculations and effects on peoples health who have to breathe this mess day in and out.
Last week two of my neighbors relatives died and they were both under 50. My lungs constrict everyday this pollution exists in so called " moderate" levels. and I am too poor to move. I am on disability. I have compared every fact I could with whatever is out there to show that one doesn't have to die or have lungs constrict in order to show cause and effect. Yet why this isn't the most important issue in life right now beats me. I have talked to people who also think besides food choices the levels of pollution can make or break communities much more then politicians yet nothing is talked about and we have to work so hard to get politicans to help them help people enjoy the many beneifits of our history and culture? To me this should be a no brainer. so yes I look at the numbers from airnow website and wonder why anyone who has the means would choose to live here. Sure people have to do more but one wonders if anything could be done when so few things are going our way. I hope you remain optimistic but my way to deal with it is to leave links and make people think about what is happening to their air! and no one does anything. They talk about the British citizen poisoned by Russian spies. this is exactly what I think is happening to NE states especially in my city but only slower. Ps they came out with a report that says power plant pollution is better then 1999 but auto emissions added on with whats left are and have taken its place and still making NE harmful so this report was done from space and shows much more has to be done about auto emissions also but good job for trying to curtail coal pollution.
