Default location dependent muggings

These crimes are obviously not going on everywhere, everyone is getting robbed in the exact same places somewhere between 45th and farragut between chestnut and baltimore. On this thread alone how many muggings have been pointed out in this area; (and my roommate got jumped on farragut btwn chestnut and walnut). I think its insane. UPenn or Drexel or the cops really need to do something

We have crime but not the kind that makes you nervous.
I'm not afraid of drug dealers. Drug dealers don't want to rob you. A crack head needing cash might - although the only thing that has happened to me is someone stole my trash can, with trash in it??? That's just weird. Prostitutes don't make me nervous. There's just lots of people hanging out around there, so for all of the reasons listed I just stay away from that block.

Try that crime data map...find a nice apartment complex in a low crime area....don't be afraid or paranoid to walk around...you'll sleep better at night.
I'm not sad or ashamed of my "paranoia". It's just part of city living. Better to be safe.

I love where I live. I love my neighbors. I have no desire to move. I actually own my home. I paid $30k for my house (I'm rather proud of that). I on a block of hard working lower middle class people - just like me. I'm very happy. I sleep fine at night - in fact sometimes I even forget to lock my front door.

I agree. This seems to be the same group of people. I don't think it is a representation of how the neighborhood usually is. I don't think it's the norm.

Default Crime stats

Just in case anyone does not know about this you can find out exactly what is going on in your hood on a week by week basis all throughout west philadelphia using the upenn data base (which is a mixture of their own report and the police report from the city)

They have it going back pretty far and it stays pretty current as well.

http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/crimes-...51-crimes.html

Incidentally the "shooting at 49th and walnut" which never showed up in the news earlier this month was actually a homicide on the 4900 block of chancellor.

There is still a lot of crime close to upenn, most of it is petty theft. I'm still somewhat convinced (but not totally) there is more crime < 44th than further out away from the campuses. There are crap loads of aggravated assaults further out. Anyway looking at each weeks crime reports is pretty enlightening. It boggles my mind that so many people get jumped in broad daylight on walnut; especially places like 39th or 42nd. It makes me wonder if those developers really will get $380k or whatever they were asking for those housing on 45th and sansom.

I live at 46th and Pine and I will not let stuff like this scare me. If you let things like this scare you then you let them win. Crime happens in a city and its just something you have to be prepared for and take precautions against. Muggings are not isolated to just University City. To say things like you should move to a safer area is basically like saying lets run and hide. I will not give up on my neighborhood because a few thugs think its ok to scare us.

Wasn't there a townwatch at one point for this area? Maybe its time one is formed again.

Thanks for saying that....Generally it is not people from the surrounding neighborhoods but people from throughout the city near and far, mostly far. For some reason, U City has a reputation for having easy targets throughout the city among a certain criminal element. The prime time seems to be from 1-2 am to daybreak.

It is also an extremely dark community in most areas---particularly residential sections like 46th and Pine.

People should remember that the UCD safety ambassadors do not largely patrol residential areas and are more apt to be on or near a commercial corridor and lighting should be improved dramatically in the residential areas.

My take is that U City is indeed an appealing target for criminals, because there is often at night enough street traffic to create victims but not so much as to create witnesses. That said, 1) I think it's generally safe, 2) when the particular instigator gets caught they'll be a drop off in these until somebody else gets a bright idea, and 3) it's usually not coming from the immediately surrounding neighborhoods of West Philly--many of which are fairly stable--but from people coming from other parts of the city.

No offense, but if you are that apprehensive about your neighborhood you should move. I'm not afraid at 45th and Baltimore but if I ever got to that point I'd be out.

just b/c muggings happen more often in unoversity city than other places doesn't mean you should move out. deal with it. admit it's a problem and address it. saying, it's part of city life when clearly it's more a part of some areas than others is a defeatist it seems to me.
