Default $13 for cat litter??

Ok, I'm grateful that the pet supply store moved closer to me. But $13 for cat litter? $13 for something for my cat to poop in and throw away?? I don't think so. I can tolerate the so-called 'designer' cat foods but $13 for a bag of cat litter is just plain ridiculous. Wondering how long UC Pets is gonna last in the neighborhood with those prices...?

There are a good number of people out there who are more than willing to pay $13 for cat litter (I am not one of them). As long as there are people out there with disposable income who love their pets, there will be $13 cat litter.

I don't know how big the bag you saw was, but I've seen some small bags for very large prices. The litter is quite advanced in terms of being natural, not harmful to kitty's paws, all sorts of wonderful things. So it is "worth" the price in that respect, although not a necessity for your cat to have a happy and fufilled bowel movement. My two wee beasties are happy with their non-scented, low cost good ol' fashioned litter. They would rather I spend the extra money on treats.

I buy some cheap stuff. It comes in this big yellow bucket and lasts about two months. I think it costs around $10.

I don't remember the size, actually. It was a good-sized bag but I still thought it was way overpriced. "Natural", "paw-loving", my tushy! -- I love my cat, but that litter would have to be laced with gold dust for me to spend that kind of cash.

I went to the corner grocery and bought some no-name litter, mixed in some Arm & Hammer baking soda and as soon as I was done, Jazz hopped in there and christened it. Works for me.

Gold dust is not recomeded for a kitty cat's optimal health.

Gotta love that Arm & Hammer! A new guest to my house was standing not a yard away from the litter box and asked, "so, where do you keep the litter box?"

Jazz seems like a really nice name for a cat! My wee beasties are Tasker and Wasabi. Tasker is a tiger and Wasabi is hot and spicy!

How much SHOULD cat litter cost? I am fairly new at this cat momma thing.

This is what I use. Well, I don't use it, my cats do. Anyway, it works well and is a pretty good value at eight dollars a box. Cat food is a lot more expensive than the litter. I've found the prices are a little better across the board at Pet Smart than the supermarket.

I'm a HUGE fan of Fresh Step! I use it (well, my cat does - LOL!) almost all the time but sometimes it's hard to find in local grocery stores. I forgot it when I went to the supermarket earlier in the day and I was all out so I was pretty desperate.... but not so desperate that I'd pay $13 for a medium-size bag of litter.

Pathmark on Gray's Ferry carries Fresh Step.

If you are a pet specialty store and you get a straight across the board percentage markup you would be foolish not to carry whatever shmancy specialty items there is a market for. I haven't checked in a little while at UC Pets but Catharine also said she was investigating decent el-cheapo bulk bin litter and feed to cover both ends of the market, as it were. Next time I go in I'll have to ask what happened with the bulk bin stuff.
