Hi everyone,
I'm new to philly and am currently residing in U. City. I would like to know where's a good place for a good haircut? I guess this can be split into different categories: cheap and decent, cheap and good, and good overall, regardless of price. I'm a student here and just moved here from the west coast. Things are VERY different here. There aren't any 24 hour Walmarts, but only 24hr CVS/Rite Aids/Walgreens. Also, there aren't any visibly nice places for haircuts, or maybe I just haven't kept a good, open eye? Please help! Back home I used to go to a barber college and they did AWESOME work for only $4. I am willing to spend probably about $10 - 20 per cut, but ideally the cheaper the better. (student here...remember?) Maybe if the place is truly awesome I am sure I could splurge and spend $30-40. I'm willing to travel anywhere if it is indeed worth the trip, but I guess I could limit it to a 30 mile radius from the Penn campus. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Hmmm, I admit there there IS a lack of decent inexpensive barber shops here. I don't know why. I tend to do things myself (I can be cheap like that). However, when I don't feel like it, I go to the shop in my neighborhood. Its called "Opera" on 20th just north of Walnut and a friend recommended it to me. If you're looking for chain-type barber shops, there's a SuperCuts (yeah, I know) on South Street between 2nd and 3rd. I'm surprised there aren't more barber shops around UC where you are.
By the way, I ntoiced you mentioned in the other thread that you were Chinese. Perhaps an Asian barber shop might be better then? If so there's one in one of the Asian shopping centers on Washington Ave. in South Philly. Its the shopping center at Washington and 6th (or around there). You'll have to drive slow since the shopping center is kind of back away from the street. Its on the south side and you'll see a Ba Li bakery (I think they mgiht have changed their name though) and a large banquet restaurant called "Saigon". The barber shop is in the plaza on the side of the L which is away from Saigon. I think most of the customers are Vietnamese but it'll do. |

I highly recommend the Beehive Hair Salon (2319 Fairmount Ave, 215-235-HIVE). The salon is small and unpretentious, and my stylist Kate gave me the best hair cut I've ever had. She talked to me about what I wanted, what my hair could do, and while it was on the pricier side ($40 for women, $30 for men), it was worth it. I don't know how elaborate your cut is, but if you're getting something that's a little more stylish than a basic trim or a bowl-cut, I'd check 'em out.

In UC there is an excellent Hair Cutter on 35th and Powelton called Ground Zero. It is located in the basement of an apartment building, so its not too visable but they do have a sign. They charge about $20 for a top notch, full service hair cut. I'm talking, shampoo, conditioner (scalp massage if the shampoo person is feeling friendly) and blow dry and slyling. I went there for years while I attended Drexel. They have another shop on Main St in Manayunk, that does a brisk business as well. I would call ahead for an apointment.

I'm just a simple guy with short, straight, black hair. Lookin for a new style though. Could use something as easy as wake-up-and-go to something as involving as gel-twist-turn-comb... |

Hair to Stay. Only thing is, it's in the burbs, Jenkintown to be exact. Cathy Marino owns and runs the place. She does a great job and her prices are fairly reasonable The shop is clean and friendly. Roxanne, another stylist does razor cuts. Very popular with the men.
