Default inexpensive cuts in town

There is a good place in UC called The Saturn Club, it's at 36th and Sansom. I've had some of my best cuts there by stylists named Mary and Lisa. They both charge $35 for womens' haircuts, I don't know how much mens' cuts are.

A very inexpensive place to go is the Jean Madeline Institute (a beauty school) where they charge $9 for students to cut/style your hair. That's on Orianna around 4th and Bainbridge. The only problem there is that they close around 3 in the afternoon.

Default cheap haircuts around south

If you want moderately "hip" haircuts at a decent price, there is a place at about 5th and kater (btwn 5th and randolph on kater actually) that is run by a woman who has nick cave fetish and plays in a punk band and does pretty awesome haircuts for somewhere btwn 15-> 20. I forget the name of the store but I believe her name is amy. As a guy, my favorite place which runs somewhere btwn $10->$16, is a place on south somewhere btwn 7th->8th on the south side of the street. (basically a few blocks past the vespa store on the south side). The guy does an awesome job on no nonsense haircuts and a cheap price. Avoid the chop shop. I have no idea where you can get a cheap hair cut in west philly proper

I came on today intending to make the same thread. Does anyone know where I can get a hair cut for around 20 dollars near 48th and Pine?

Smile Results of my haircutting experience...and THANKS!

First and foremost I just wanted to thank you all for your help in suggesting various places to which I can go for a nice haircut. It was good to read about all of your experiences and I will strongly consider all of the places that you all have suggested.

However, if you are interested in reading about my experience please refer to post: http://www.phillyblog.com/philly/showthread.php?t=9150

I finally did it and went out and got the deed done.

I didn't think posting here was appropriate since it's a UCity/WPhila area
so I posted it in the random part of the forum.

Thanks again!

Rocky

Default Joe's Barber shop

Rocky:
Try Joe's Barber Shop on approx 23rd and Lombard. Haircuts cost about $20 but it is a real barber shop. Great hair cuts for guys. Expect to talk sports, see several Maxim magazines, and get a haircut from a real barber. I recommend Joe himself. One warning though, if you go there on Saturday around noon expect to wait a while. It can get busy.

Benny gives great haircuts, and there is another younger guy there I think his name is Rocco who also is good. There actually have been a bunch of articles in the papers over the years about Benny because he cuts both Black and White guys hair - I guess that is unusual. Anyway for UCity I would recommend him. Occasionally I go down to South Philly Porter btw 15th and 16th, to a place called New Age. Really South Philly - imagine a modern version of a Bronx tale. There # is 215-468-7004 --- ask for Ralph. Someone mentioned South Street Cuts on South btw 7th and 8th. I used to go there. The guy - a little Vietnamese guy named Tom - gives a good haircut, but he started getting kinda of wierd on me. One time he told me something about taking me away to a deserted island and killing me. So I decided not to go back there. A few months go by and I really needed a haircut and did not have time to go anywhere else so I went back. Bad idea. He says I have been cheating on him with another barber. He starts hitting on me. I explained politely that I am not gay and was not interested. The whole time he is going on telling me how great he is at blowjobs and how I should just try him out. To say it was uncomfortable is a major understatement. I would have just gotten up and booked out of the chair but I really needed a haircut and needed it then. But I get out of there with a decent haircut and without having to hit this guy. Then he started calling me - he must have gotten my number of caller ID. One time I awnsered and told how inappropriate that was and if he called me again I would call the police. If I ever need a haircut that bad again I will get some scissors and do it myself. Needless to say I have not been back. Go see Benny - the old Italian guys know how to give a good haircut and they will not try to molest you. Also in Ardmore you can check out Joe Umile at the bottom of Rittenhouse Pl or the guys at Troncelitti's next to the train station. That is where I got my haircuts growing up. I'm telling you - I hate to stereotype but old Italian guys just seem to know how to cut hair and they definitely have the barbershop feel thing down pat.

T.O. That's a hilarious post (sorry that I found it hilarious that some random barber guy wanted to kill you and molest you prior and after..) I mean who has that stuff happen to them? That's just unheard of. Not that I don't believe you, but it's just so out of the blue and uncommon that it's kinda funny.

Nevertheless, thanks for the awesome suggestions. I'll really have to check those places out.. any chance you know how much it costs at each of those places (excluding the place with the weird viet guy.)

Joe's has been closed indefinitely, as of about a month ago. I rode by there yesterday but didn't think to look to see if anything had changed.

My last haircut was at the Penn place at 38th and Spruce (couple doors down from Wawa). It was $18 and not all that great. I think I might try the barber in HUP next.

Didn't know there was a barber IN HUP...

Please let me know how it goes after you are done. I'd love to know price and quality from there...

I'll be doing a lot of stuff at HUP over the course of the next 13 years or so so how ideal if indeed the hospital does have it's own barber!
