Does anyone know what happened at 49th and walnut today? I came home and the kids outside said there was a shooting on 49th and walnut. The cops had blocked off the road and when I was coming in, the cops were taking 2 crying women away. I haven't seen anything on the news and was wondering if anyone knew.

Didn't hear a thing about it. I usually walk right by there on my way to the Y, but I skipped the gym yesterday.
Geez... every time I read one of these 'reports', I can't decide if it's a good or a bad thing to know about this. Part of me doesn't want to know since it happens so damned often and it usually involves people who know each other, but part of me knows that it makes sense to know where the trouble spots are so as to avoid them. Sigh... Anyway, unless I'm heading for the gym, I'm rarely anywhere near there. I try to do everything I need to do south of Spruce!

Didn't see anything about it in the papers, though I may have missed it. For better or worse, the changes in the neighborhood south of spruce have had essentially no impact at all on the areas around Walnut and Chestnut. In fact, I think parts of Sansom are the sketchiest parts of the area.
In other depressing news, my wife grew up in East Flatbush, Brookyln, and when I opened the NY Times, I said, "Your neighborhood's in the news," which it usually isn't or at least usually isn't in the Times. A story about a kid who got stabbed to death for his Ipod in the middle of the afternoon, two-and-a-half blocks from where she grew up. Bob Herbert--NYT columnist--wrote a piece about the kid's family, who seemed unimaginably committed to their son, and had even moved part of the year to Stroudsburg, Pa., to protect him from the city. They brought him back to see his sisters for the weekend, and this happened. |
