Whats the deal w/ Jannie Blackwell btw? I don't understand why she would do things that go against what the people in her district actually want. I do know that many people on my block are pretty hardcore baptists (in a good way really) so I'm guessing that church has a lot of local clout as well. The connecticut supreme court case is one of the most dismaying supreme court cases in recent memory. Sandra Day O' Connor wrote a brilliant dissenting opinion on it. The reason I ask about Jannie Blackwell is I dropped her an email 2-3 weeks ago asking her about the Foodrite and got no response, no acknowledgement I am a bit surprised about this (being that i'm in her district), and being that I would think the foodrite is of some concern to her.
Whether or not it is obvious I am of the camp the ripping down old buildings for a parking lot is a brilliant recipe for making neighborhoods unsafe/unwalkable and unfriendly. Building suburban style buildings as many people on this site and in newspapers like pw have pointed out in the heart of the city and west philly (i.e. car friendly lots) worsens the neighborhood not betters it. The popular parts of the city: fairmount/old city/rittenhouse/bella vista/queens village w/ high land values are all walkable pedestrian w/ a real community feel (not that west philly doesn't) but dropping a parking lot or having weird office buildings w/ no stores on the first floor (ala market st) makes entire stretches of neighborhoods cut off from other parts. I'm a big fan and I do hope the enterprise center the the penn biotech cambridgization of market st/ university upenn area actually works but I hope they do it right..
