Default Beth A. Showell - A life too brief

For those of you in UC who knew her, Beth Showell died in a house fire on Sunday morning. A retired school teacher, past-president of Cedar Park Neighbors, volunteer with the Food Trust, and valued member of the community - she will be missed.

There is an on-going discussion on the UC List about Beth.

She was a lovely woman and a valued member of the community. I did not know her well (barely at all) but I will miss her friendly presence in the kitchen selling snacks and sodas at events at Calvary. She was also I believe one the movers and shakers in the small community garden across from her house.

Any news on the cause of the fire?

Recieved this from Cedar Park Neighbors->

On behalf of Cedar Park Neighbors, I am deeply saddened to inform you of the sudden passing of community member Beth Showell, who lost her life in a fire in her home during the late evening hours of Saturday, April 2, 2005.
Beth, a retired teacher from West Philadelphia High School, was a former president of Cedar Park Neighbors and was active in many community endeavors for many years. *Beth was also a founding member of Florence Garden, which reclaimed a vacant lot at 49th and Florence Avenue.
Currently, Beth ran the "Calvary Café", which served dinners during the Crossroads Music Series, and Abbraccio served her wonderful carrot cake as one of its popular desserts. Beth was very involved with the University City Arts League's craft shows and events, and was an active participant at the Clark Park Farmers Market. *
We extend our deepest sympathy to Beth's daughters, Christina and Amy. *For those who wish to honor Beth's memory, we will share additional details as they become available.
All who knew Beth will miss her generosity and her commitment to the University City community.
