El-
I assume the choice of Malcom X's name as a honorary title for the park was in reference to Malcom's position after his trip to Mecca and split from NOI and Elijah Mohammed. The later, mature Malcolm could not exactly be called a racist by anyone's measure - even though there are about 15 neo-Troskyist splinter groups that somewhat dubiously claim to be dervied from Malcolm's later organization.

My white best man at my wedding attended Malcolm X Elementary in Berkeley, CA and he was not alone in his ethnicity there. Naming something for Malcolm is a pretty politcally radical statement but it is not necessarily a vindication for his early "white devil" comments.

I guess I'm saddened that I'm not welcome there. It's where I wanted to live. I wish they woulda named it after King, personally if they had to name it at all. I'm not a big fan to the naming stuff to being with. Black Oak is quite nice. A statue is good commemoration. but, of course, I'm the problem with Philadelphia.
people lover overgeneralizations and assumptions don't they.

Like I said, the city and people in the neighborhood use both names more or less itnerchangably. Just because City Council pushed through a half-hearted renaming gesture once doesn't mean you should feel unwelcome in a public park.

Dude, I thought everyone reads "The Autobiography of . . ." at around 17. I did. Its certainly one of the most entertaining American biographies of the 20th century.
