Default Blue Nile Falls Restaurant - 52nd & Webster

So I had heard about new Ethiopian restaurant on 52nd and Webster btwn Baltimore and Catharine. I had heard the food was really good. We went tonight and the food was fantastic, though its a little bit funny set up.

Basically the restaurant is the upstairs "banquet" room above the bar at 52nd and Webster (Meg's or Mel's?). The bar downstairs is one of those West Philly bars where everything is mirrors and the jukebox is really, really loud. There is a side door on Webster and you can go straight up to the upstairs room or walk through the bar downstairs which is pretty lively and might not be your spot unless you really like Nelly at thumping high volume.

Its brand new and the lady is really nice. I think we were the only customers that night. The upstairs room, is like a lounge / banquet rooom, and actually really cozy.

We got the meat sampler though they had a vegetarian sampler that looks pretty good as well. The lamb tibs and the shreded in a spicy berber style sauce were amazing. She also makes a kind of crumbly homemade crumbly Ethiopian cheese, kind of like Feta, that's really good. A couple different lentil dishes including an cold, spicy lentil salad that was really good.

Pretty funny odd spot, i hope it lasts and does well. The food was awesome.

We went last night based on your recommendation and absolutely agree that this place is a hidden gem. Hands down the best Ethiopian I've had in West Philly with very reasonable prices and a really neat location if you sit in one of the window tables overlooking 52nd street. The staff was extremely nice and the owner told me that he's ordered signs to put up outside, since the place is now essentially impossible to find if you didn't know that it's there. This is a great addition to the neighborhood and really deserves its support.

I ate there tonight and it's quite good. The lady is a very friendly person and oddly, I was the only person there at the time.

I has this lentil dish that was quite good and spicy. Truly a hidden gem. I hope they put a sign up outside and I've been thinking about calling the city paper to see if they wish to put a little blurb in their weekly "feeding frenzy" section.

Default Blue Nile Falls review and menu

Thanks for the heads-up on this place! I went out on Friday night, and it's as good as Seand says. Here's a short review with photos and a scan of the menu. (You can read it from this link, but it doesn't go 'live' on malcolmxpark.org for another hour or so...)

Default new Ethiopian restaurant in the hood

just what the neighborhood needs. and no, that is not sarcasm!

just received their menu in my front door this morning. looks good.

here's the basic text of the handout

The Blue Nile Falls Ethiopian Restaurant
720 S 52nd St
215-747-9607

Tues-Sunday 12 PM to 10 PM (guess they're not going to have a bar similar to most of the other Ethiopian restaurants in the area?)

appetizers run about $3, entrees average about $7-10 plus they have a meat combo for $11.50 and a veggie combo for $8.50

they have fish dishes too (not sure if Dahlak, Abbysinia, etc have fish?) and Sandwiches as well as an americanized menu.

Domestic beers $2.50 and imports $3!

might have to check them out tonight.

Just ate lunch at this place, and it really is great. My wife and I had the Veggie Combo. Similar to Abyssinia, but probably a little better (and the service has all the other West Philly Ethiopian places beat by miles). The couple that owns it are really nice, and it seems like it could really use some neighborhood support. I highly recommend it!
