You can walk across the Manayunk Train Bridge. The old train path on the other side takes you between the two cemeteries.

CAN we actually walk on the train bridge?? Or should I say, are we allowed to walk on the bridge without risk of getting arrested for "trespassing"? LOL. Just the other day I was wondering if I'd be allowed to do that, since it would be a fun walk.

And yes, I really really hope they reopen the rest of the R6 Cynwyd line. I often go to Manayunk before and after work, and I work around Cynwyd. A 5min train ride from Cynwyd to Manayunk would be a LOT better than the 20-40min trip I currently take to Manayunk during rush hour, which involves walking, taking a bus through City Ave traffic, waiting then transferring to another bus, etc.

Another reason to reopen the former R6 stations: It would help the local Bala Cynwyd businesses that have since declined. For example, the beautiful historic Bala movie theater(has anyone ever checked out this place?? It's quite ornate and pretty). Or some of the forgotten restaurants, such as Cafe Shira, which has delicious kosher food that is healthier than your average cafe's grub.

Well part of the reason why the R6 Cynwyd line isn't used much is because it doesn't go to many stations. If the R6 Cynwyd line was reopened to the Manayunk and Ivy Ridge stations, then more people would have reason to use it. Another possible reason why the R6 Cynwyd isn't used much is because it only runs a select few times per day, and because it is cheaper to take the Bus 44 or Bus 121 to center city than to pay the overpriced regional rail fares. Taking the R6 Cynwyd to Manayunk would be a lot more convenient than taking 2-3 busses to Manayunk, but taking the R6 Cynwyd to center city doesn't take that much less time than taking a bus to center city to make it worthwhile unless I already have a Zone 2 trailpass.

Perhaps they could extend the R6 past Ivy Ridge to include areas that aren't normally served by Septa regional rail lines. Also, it would be a good idea to run the R6 Cynwyd line in between the times the R6 Norristown line runs...for example, if the R6 Norristown train leaves center city on the hour, schedule the R6 Cynwyd train to run on the half hour of every hour. That way, anyone heading to Ivy Ridge who misses the first R6 train wouldn't have to wait long for the second R6.

I know someone that lives in Manayunk and he tells me that the R6 Norristown train is jam packed on its way to Philly most mornings. Reopening the R6 Cynwyd line to Ivy Ridge might alleviate some of the congestion on the R6 Norristown during rush hour.

Default bumped into some info.

http://bcgp.blogspot.com/2008/01/cyn...n-station.html
has a tidbit on plans being made for the trail.

In the Schuylkill Connection May 2008 paper, it talks about how the Cynwyd Trail is a project of the Lower Merion Planning Commission. The way the article is described, it seems as if the trail is not meant to be walked upon as it states "The conversion of old rail lines to recreational trails is one of the ways land is being repurposed for public use."

The article says that a bridge (the bridge for the old R6 I assume) is called the Blackie Mule Bridge.
