Default Pellet Stove Users?

Anybody out there using a pellet stove as a primary or secondary source of heat?

Where did you buy your stove?
Any mechanical issues?
Where do you buy pellets?

You can buy pellet stove at wherehouse where wood pellets are sold in bulk.

Or do you have neighbo(u)rs? You could have asked them first!

Thumbs down

We had one and the pellets are expensive to buy and when it would burn, you would get a coating of white dust over everything in the house.

We switched to a gas fireplace instead.

I agree ... if you are looking to buy a fireplace, I would get a ventless gas one rather than pellet. They provide a lot of warmth and like pellet stoves, don't need a chimney or exterior exhaust. I've had a couple of them for a while now without any problems (if you do some reading, some sites warn about excessive moisture from ventless gas fireplaces, but I've had no problems. You can also get one rather inexpensively at Lowe's or HD.

$5-$9 per 40lb. bad from what I've found... cheaper if you buy by the ton... I'm skeptical about making the pellet plunge though. I still haven't heard from anybody who is actually using a pellet stove.

my friend uses one for his studio and has recently bought a house and plans on installing the pellet stove in his house this fall. i have though about the idea of a pellet stove also but i too am skeptical of the price.

i am thinking of buying a very efficient soap stone stove as my primary heat in a house that we recently bought. it is a shell and as of now it has no heat. i am debating on putting in duct work for central air as a back up. we live near the park and wood is free from the fairmpount recycling center if you pick it up. we have another friend who does this and he pays nothing for heat all year.

my parents use 2 pellet stoves to heat our house... we supplement it with electric heat, but very limited. (the house is big)

i'm not sure the cost of the stoves or the cost of the pellets, but we've never gotten any white dust or anything...

my parents live in allentown, and there is a stove shop just north of allentown where they got it... they specialize in pellet stoves and are pretty good at what they do.

the stoves pump out TONS of heat, we usually keep it on setting "1", on a scale from 1-5, and in the dead of winter, 2 stoves will heat our whole first floor (about 1300 sq ft)... the only thing we use electric heat for is the upstairs and basement...

Default re: pellet stove in the city

Does anyone have any info on what emits more carbon, pellets vs. natural gas? And to the person with parents in Allentown, what kind of venting did your parents need to install for their stoves? I'm trying to plan exhaust venting in a brick row home and it's difficult to imagine. It can't share the exhaust with a gas furnace, can it? That seems like too much for that diameter vent.
