I think the Bubbly tastes like a very nice light beer. Too bland.

The blond is very good and had me walking out tipsy a few times.

Also, couldn't agree more about the immaturity of the beers. before moving back to West Philly, I lived (literally) across the street from Victory. It wasn't just the number of beers they could brew at once, it always seemed like they put a lot more into the process. Still the superior beers.

I wasn't thinking of it so much as them being amateurs as a matter of getting used to new digs (equipment, management(!), staff, demand) that may mean that it will take a while for them work work out the kinks.

And as mentioned below, a few different folks have had their hands in the brewing since the place opened so that may be having an impact.

I've certainly liked most of what I've had there so far, and, all things being equal, would rather drink there than have to get bottles to bring home from someplace else, but there have also been more than a couple times when I've changed my mind about filling the growler after having a taste. And then when something comes out really well, like the barleywine, they won't let you fill a growler with it. :-(

Despite these mild reservations I'm very hopeful about the place and am thrilled to have them in the neighborhood.

i would agree that the blonde has a more robust hoppy flavor. I would just point out that while the Bubbly is very mild and smooth drinking its actually 7.1% while the blonde is only 6%.

haven't been over there to try it myself but I have been told that the ginger wheat beer is now on tap. seems it replaced the blonde.

I also attended one of those danger danger shows at dock street for the first time this past sunday night. I got there late (last band was playing when I stepped in the door). there didn't seem to be too much drinking going on, despite the decent sized crowd, but that may have been because I got there late. also, I got a final beer when the band was playing, apparently, their last song. talk about mass exodus after the band was over!

also, there is a pretty major fire right now at Matt's Brewing Company (who contract brews for Dock St) so if you like their bottled beer you might wanna stock up now.

Scott "The Dude" Morrison officially resigned last night , handing the task of brewmaster solely over to Michael Fava.

he still hopes to open up his own brewing facility near Chester. I know I'll be banging down the door on grand opening day (hopefully this time he'll actually brew some of that much missed 5 Czars Imp Stout!).

best of luck to Fava!

Can we call Michael Fava "The Bean"?

Thumbs up Trust in The Bean

While I know it seems scary to some Fava really knows his stuff.

For those that have been paying attention there's always been one man at the side of the various brewmasters Dock Street had and Mike is that man. He's been under training and has developed quite a firm grasp on the brew. Many of the past brews we've all come to love have been Fava inspired.

The ginger beer is light, pleasant... not my thing but seemed to be plenty popular when I was there last. Also the sattellite stout came back and as it was before if you love coffee it's totally your brew...

I think I may swing by tonight, grab a beer or two (or three or four) and a small pizza while Im at it. (BBQ chicken while not that inventive is REALLY well done here, nice balance of flavors... dont lose the onions no matter if they are typically your thing or not)

Oh and for those who love Dock Street but fear the wait... remember they're open for lunch on Saturdays, I've never had a long wait yet.

I've gotta say, I absolutely love Dock Street and the vibe it's brought to the neighborhood. I've been going several times a month since the place opened. That said, is it my imagination or has the service gotten worse? The last three times I've been, I've had really mediocre service from friendly but forgetful waitstaff. I went tonight and the waiter was a nice guy, but forgot our order several times. It wasn't even crowded but took 45 minutes to get a small plain pizza. The last time I went, my table outside waited 45 minutes just to get the first round of beers! Nobody came to our table at all for quite a while, and one of our friends had to go inside twice to get someone to take our order. I want to support and enjoy my local brewery, but lately I'm beginning to think it's like Abyssinia--you just expect to deal with mediocre, slow service if you want to enjoy the food/drink.

Thats a shame, I went on Thursday night and everything was great... service was friendly and as prompt as it seemed they could be... our server came by checking on us regularly and letting us know the status of our food... it came out nice and hot, we enjoyed a few beers and barely saw an empty glass during our time even with a pretty full restaurant. It really seems like it may just be luck of the draw with servers and other circumstances. Still, at least they seem a bit nicer now!
