Well you get a glass of both and you go back and forth . . .

The Chocolate Stout is a tad bitter but creamier and fairly complex. The maple porter is also an interestingly complex flavor but sweet.

Wow, I was surprised how much I likd that Chocolate Stout. Normally I'm not a fan of chocolate beers. I definitely prefer it over the Satellite Stout.

I went last night just to try the chocolate stout before it's gone. Stout is my beer of choice, and I definitely preferred it to the satellite. I didn't love it though.

I'm not a technical beer person, but sometimes it tastes like the some of the beer at dock street has too much gas in it? Something about how it goes down or the aftertaste?

The trippel is still fantastic...

Depends on which one you are talking about. I've noticed that as an issue on a few of the beers right after they first go on tap and that they seem to "settle in" after about a week. The beer is very fresh there and I have notice they sometimes adjust the carbonation a little it seems right after a new one comes on tap.

I had the Chocolate for the first time last week (I think it was on tap for about a week at that point) and didn't notice anything wrong with it (though I did think the Baltic Porter was a little "off" when I had it the first few days being on tap) but my first guess as to what you are describing might be that the beer is "green" or too young (Acetaldehyde). would you describe the beer as having a harsh or sharp flavor with a bitter aftertaste? some describe it as having the taste of green apples?

are you speaking specifically about this batch of Chocolate Stout or do you mean it as an on-going problem with their beers? do you only notice it in beers that have recently been tapped?

I liked the Chocolate. not one of my favorites, but it was enjoyable. as far as stouts I still preferred their first batch of the Satellite Stout best.

not harsh, but a slight aftertaste.

I was referring to this batch of chocolate (the first one I think?) and some of the recent stout as well.

So thoughts on the Bubbly Wit (a wheat double with champagne yeast) and the new blonde (whic I haven't tried yet)?

I like the Bubbly Wit which despite the name is not particularly carbonated. Deceptively strong and smooth drinking for its 7%.

I've often noticed the same thing, like maybe they are serving them too soon. Not so much with the porters or stouts as with the lighter beers. I have been putting it down to the learning curve of working in a relatively new establishment though I suppose at some point I may start expecting better timing.

I really love being able to support a local brewery but frankly there are better beers out there so I hope they can settle in a bit more and keep improving the quality.

the only beer of theirs that I recall tasting Acetaldehyde in was the Imp Oatmeal Stout. definetely needed more time in the kettle when they put it on the first time. I remember tasting a considerable decline in the Rye IPA when they went in transition from Scott to Julius and back to Scott. but it tasted as good as ever last time I was there.

keep in mind that they only have 6 taps whereas a brewpub like Victory has 20, so that in itself may lead them to rush getting a new beer on tap when something else has kicked.

and Dock Street's brewer is by no means an amateur. Scott "the dude" Morrison is one of the most respected brewers in the Philadelphia area. however, he's currently only there to consult their future brewmaster, Mike Fava, so they are most certainly in a state of transition right now. I hear another month and the reigns will be completely handed over to Mike.
