Question

What makes the high gravity beers special? As an amateur drinker, I don't know if I'd be able to appreciate the difference.

well you'll be drunker on high gravity beers, for one thing

high gravity just refers to the density of the beer before fermentation begins (ie the amount of fermentable sugars in the wort). there's a precise calculation using an instrument called a hydrometer (a reading of 1.000 calibrated is H20 at 60 degrees F) where you take the original gravity reading and subtract the final gravity reading and then multiply that answer by 131 in order to get the final alcohol percentage.

As Smokin notes, higher gravity = higher alcohol. Higher alcohol beer requires more malt and longer aging, both of which add to production cost.

Just posting to mention that the long awaited for trippel brewed with imported Belgian yeast was put on tap recently and its off the hook. Their best best beer yet, better than the Curacao dubble.

Mmmmmmmmm.

drinking a growler of it now (need it after that dismal Flyers game!). wasn't much of a fan of the Farmhouse. I guess I just like my Saisons to taste like a traditional Saison.

am interested to try their first Chocolate Stout.

"Sexual Chocolate Stout" was on tap last night. Its unsweetened dark chocolate remember so the resulting concoction is deep dark complex and a tad bit bitter. Very rich and creamy stout. Very good.

Still loving the triple, as well.

I tried this last night as well. Was very nice! In their description on this beer they say it is a well endowed beer which will have its way with you. That it did! I stumbled out last night

I'd just had a Triple on top of a Maple Porter, so I imagine the chocolate just might've succeeded in "having its way" with me. Maybe I'll go back during the week and try the chocolate. I must say I was surprised at how much I liked the Triple. I'm not usually a big fan of that style of Belgian beer.
