Default Grocery Stores in West Philadelphia

I'm curious where most people in UC do there grocery shopping. Comments?

You don't have none of the above up there.

I shop at the Acme on City Line and/or Trader Joes.

I may shop at the Fresh Grocer at 40th St, but it doesn't mean I like going there. When my friends are willing, I try bumming a ride to other locations around the city.

I've been to the Thriftway. Nothing pretty, for sure. But at least there was room for me to shop. Going to Fresh Grocer can be so stressful!

As crowded as it often is, I shop at Fresh Grocer on 40th.

Default Support the City

We started at Thriftway (now closed?), then moved over to Fresh Grocer at 40th, then started shopping at Pathmark at Gray's Ferry (once we joined PhillyCarShare). I have shopped at the Fresh Grocer at 56th and like it.

I thinking I am mentally blocking out the name of the place at 48th & Pine, it's so horrid!

Despite my desire to shop in Philly, I REALLY like the Giant Foods in Landsdowne. If for no other reason - they have a plastic bag recycling box by the door when you walk in.

Food Rite is gone. Haven't heard anything reliable about what will take its place.

The Fresh Grocer at 40th has good food but is horribly managed. I've often stood in long lines while the shift managers chat away and pretend not to notice that there aren't enough cashiers on duty. Cashiers often leave their registers for no apparent reason, though for this I also blame the managers, since they see it happen and do nothing about it. Some of the staff at the deli and butcher areas are good, though.

The Fresh Grocer at 56th is much better. Sometimes the lines are long, but the service is a notable improvement. I think it's safe and reasonably pleasant. But often enough we do our grocery shopping when we're out driving around anyway, either heading over to Columbus or out Baltimore Ave to Delaware Co.

Okay, I just about lost my mind yesterday when I went to Fresh Grocer. I placed my order for lunchmeat in the deli section, and the guy behind the display claimed I was copping an attitude with him. He then proceeded to call me rude and implied that I was racist. What?! That just crosses the line. I was so shocked I didn't know what to do. I had dealt with this guy a dozen times before, and he was always one of the nice ones. But something had ticked him off today. Rather than play his game, I simply said "I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Have a nice day." But believe me...I was ready to get this guy fired instantly by making a big scene.

This is just so discouraging. And sadly, this employee is typical of the rude cashiers and staff that work at this establishment. How many times do I have to complain before similar things happen again?! And worse of all, I feel stuck. My schedule is so jam packed, I don't have time to take an extra hour out of my day to go to a different grocery store. So chances are, I will see this wonderful Fresh Grocer again.

How can a company get away with hiring such horrible employees?

Le sigh
