Default Parking in University City

It's cheaper to park in UC and ride the trolley in to Center City than it is to park there for the day. I'm tired of my nieghborhood being used as a parking lot by

1-University students commuting to classes
2-Surburban residents commuting to work in Center City.
3-New Jersey residents commuting to work in Center City.

Grrrrrrr :explode:

Well, as someone who used to be somewhere in the middle of what you guys are complaining about, I can't appologize.

Philadelphia was not a city built for cars and the city is doing everything it can to keep it that way. (Don't ask me why.)

When I lived w/o a garage, I'd park it on the street for weeks at a time and that's life. What are the other options. I use it enough that I feel it's worth while having it but that was mostly on the weekends. 2 hour parking signs help a little but no where near enough. It's pretty easy to get a permit and i don't think they check if you ever leave.

What would be nice is if the city would make them as hang tag and only sell them to owners of properties. The owners could then do what they wanted with them.

Further, one of the other big problems I noticed is that people in this city can't park for $#!+. They end up taking up two spots. I see this all the time. It was so bad one time that I a block that could hold 15 cars only had room for about 10 because of how people had parked. I think the city should paint lines on the street to "help" with this problem...

I'd like to buy a house but I'm unable to find one that is affordable with parking. Until then, I'll keep renting and if I have to parking on streets for weeks at a time..

I understand the car has to be registered to the person living in the zone. I just heard it was pretty simple to prove where you live and then even easier when it comes to renewing..

I'm all for making tags necessary if it helps. I've heard there are problem with that though with people legally parked still getting ticketed...

Hey bgandersen, why not get your street permited?

Oh, wow. Getting a street set up for permitted parking is one of the worst community battles that you can have. Turns neighbor against neighbor. If you think the battle of "historic district" status is nasty, try a parking district.

Everyone in Philadelhia feels they have the right to their own parking space whenever they want it. I guess it has gotten better but people used to fight over whether someone had the right to move the "chair" or tire that people would leave to block anyone else from parking in "their spot."

Why Philadelphia (actually, let's be fair, Septa) never instituted the sort of "park and ride" system that other cities (even Hartford, CT) have is beyond me. I would guess that the suburban representatives just don't give a damn about suburbanites parking on city streets.

At least, one hope, they are using the septa transit to get into CC!

I'm not sure I knew it was such a battle, but then again, this is Philly, everything is a battle unless it is bad, then the city just does it!

Ohhhh, I know the answer to this one... It's cause they're dumb asses!!! Come on, tell me I'm right!

Futher, I have no problem if people want to drive in the city and park, I just think the city should put in more parking for them to do so. I think almost every new building in NYC has unground parking...

Can’t or won’t? Sounds like you have a very self-centered attitude about the whole thing, and that’s the whole problem in a nutshell.

Get rid of the car and rent on weekends, or use Phillycarshare. http://www.phillycarshare.com

Part of the problem, not part of the solution!

I did. This is really a macro problem besides just my street.

That sounds like a good option. How about zoning all of UC as permit parking only? Sell the permits on an annual basis and mark up the cost to people who live outside of Philly or have “out of state” cars.

Won't. And why should I? I pay the crummy city wage tax. I don't think it's being self-centered to want to have a car and to be able to park it. I follow street sign laws, haven't gotten a ticket yet. Why should I (or anyone else) be punished for having a vechile?

No thanks. I'll just keep paying to park it in a garage and keep it. Or I'll park it on the street. It is also a place for them to be.

That's true but there's only so much you can do about it. Unless you want to work at getting the entire area permitted, you should be happy about getting your street done.

Or, even better, you could get the neighborhood privatized. That way no one but people who own and those with permits can park there even on weekends. It works well in Queens. However, it does make the owners responsible for the maitnance of the streets...

I think this is a fine idea but I don't think they'd handle it very well and further, I imagine that the money they would get wouldn't necessarily go to UC where it belongs...

Yeah, they put in 2 hour parking restrictions for non-residents on our street (3200 Baring) about a year ago...which is actually quite refreshing for those of us who live there. We thought it was kind of random at first since we are strictly a residential street, but now the people who live there can actually park! Its quite amazing. Before, Drexel students were parking for the day, or multiple days, leaving no spaces for the people who actually live there.

I must say, it does suck for the renters on the block who have out of state plates because they have to park on a different street. But since I don't even have a car in the city, I have little pity for them.
