I figured as much. What worried me was that she said she didn't want money, she wanted us to go with her somewhere (a gas station). I was just going to pass her off as a standard panhandler (the likes of which I tend to ignore) but that set off a red flag in my mind.

He was vehement that this wouldn't be satisfactory; he needed the fare. As far as I'm concerned, this exposed the scam.
I often get the person who needs, $.35, $.50 or whatever to get the bus to work/their dying mother/away from an abusive partner/etc. (The bus, of course, is $2.00, so they're saying they have $1.65 or $1.50.) Funny, they never seem to be interested in buying a token instead.

Or asking the bus driver for a free ride for that reason...

Another spin on the same old story: I was approached by a guy today, around 4th and Pine, who clamed that he had just moved to a Soc. Hill house (a stately one too - judging from the address he mentioned). Guess what - his Lexus was stolen (instead of towed, but go figure) and he needed $20 to get it recovered.

Makes me wonder what he mentioned a Lexus and not a Lamborghini.

Hi all, I'm really glad I came across your posts - it makes me feel better that I stuck to my guns last night and didn't give a guy (whom I thought to be a scam artist) any money -

48th and Baltimore, 8 pm, a guy came out of nowhere, wearing a nice trench coat and suit, and gave me a story about how his car had broken down, the transit police had helped him (which makes no sense anyway - the transit police are SEPTA, but whatever) - and he didn't have his MAC card and needed nine bucks. He was an erratic talker, babbling on about how he'd give me his gold watch if i'd help him, he works at the Restaurant School, etc...

So many weird questions arise from this: Why would a guy, so well-dressed, go out of the house with his gold watch but not a cell phone?
-If he'd already asked the police, why hadn't they helped him further?
-Why just nine dollars?
-Why didn't he call one of his "Restaurant School" buddies?

Etc, etc, etc...

Just wanted to make everyone aware of this dude. Don't waste your time, and keep your wits about you.

Cheers...

Default beggars

Not so common for them to ask you to go with them. Thats bad news for sure.

Most beggars in that immediate area are junkies either from the 1/2 way house on 3300 block of Powelton ... or loiter at the 7-11 at 34th and Lancaster ave ... btw .. they live in other 1/2 way houses in the immediate area.

I've experienced almost every beggar over there at least 3 times ... none are honest.

All of them are junkies.

Use caution and do not talk to them. At all.
