Default Cedar Park (the park itself) construction begins

Some of you may have noticed a temporary fence has gone up completely surrounding the actual small park of Cedar Park on the 4900 block of Baltimore. You may have also noticed the old play equipment is currently being demolished to make way for updated, safer improved play equipment. othre improvements include additional lighting in the park, electricity for events like the Cedar Park Faire, and landscaping including a new curving low wall and pathway through the park.

Gotta love how both the anarchist kids doing the Food Not Bombs food give away and the kids playing poker on the chess board table simply move the temporary fencing out of the way and go about their business as if there is no fence whatsoever.

Finally! I sure hope they finish construction in time for the festival on the 30th cuz they don't seem to be making too much progress as of yet.

The Cedar Park Faire will most likely be held on the street on the 4900 block of Catharine because of the constructiton. It depends on a number of things but that's more likely than not.

Come out and celebrate the great new feel to the park. Its much more open and approachable for everyone in the park. Lighting and electricity means that everybody can make more use of the park.

Thanks for the historic photos Little Fat Dog.

This is so informative. Even up to the late 70's, well after (mostly) Irish Catholics in West Philly had given way to (mostly) African Americans I have frequently been told how vibrant a shopping district the 4900 and 5000 block of Baltimore Ave. was. The often white anarchist welf-appointed critics of gentrification seldom acknowledge how far this neighborhood has fallen as a commercial strip from the bustle that reigned for most of its existence - what it was originally built for. I wish there was a newstand at the corner of 49th and half as many and varied a number of stores now as there are in this photo.

Wow. Cool. Anyway hope to see some of you at the dedication of the park on Saturday. I have to say I actually like the current confiugration even a little more than those heavy hedges from teh other photo.
