Just as the realtor from O'Donnell mentioned, anyone can look up property info on the BRT website: (http://brtweb.phila.gov/brt.apps/Sea...spx?url=search) they are public records, unfortunately I tried both 704 and 407 and there is no listing for either. Are you sure of the address?

The neighborhood I currently live in is has similar activity (out of someone's home though - my immediate neighbor - lucky me) and the best I have been able to do is make noise complaints. It might be easier for me to do in Kensington since my block is almost all residential and the 'events' always seem to occur post-1am, but I've also had support from other neighbors, so I have that in my favor.

Another prominent realtor in west philly is Common Ground, I know, I am currently buying a house from them in this general vicinity so I am curious about this because it may directly effect me. Maybe they could give you a better lead on the property owner. However, it doesn't sound like anything illegal has actually been witnessed here, and since you can't exactly convict or arrest someone on a hunchmaybe you could just keep your feelers out for an actual incident (and in the interim don't let it make you paranoid.) Your observations are greatly appreciated but bear in mind that there are lots of 'elders' giving advice about getting out of the thug life that might not be doing anything illegal, and quite possibly they are doing just the opposite.

I wonder if you could involve the University City District or any of the community organizations in this matter? Maybe if it is some sort of support group situation you could ask their affiliation...

704 S 49th it turns out is a hip hop recording studio. The guy has finally hung a sign for his business out front and has made something of an effort to make himself available to his neighbors. He also seems to be doing a better job of discouragint the recording talent and/or recording talent's entourage from hanging outside the door at all hours partying and conducting "business". In otherwords the guy finally is taking some repsonsiblity for what goes on outside of his door.

This issue resolved itself some months back so i would not overly fret on it. StevenT's mugger on the other hand is a current issue of concern.

StevenT are there any other distinguishing characteristics of this mugger around 49th and Springfield? Light, dark, medium skinned complexion? What was his hair, facial features like? Afro, braids, shaved head? About how tall is average height, 5'10"? Roughly estimated weight for "a bit stocky"? Distinguishing clothes? If he's on the rock he probably only has one cold weather coat because all the money is going to the rock. What is the address of the porch he was hanging out on?

Neighbors have a few limited ways of bringing some heat down on the owner of the building (like just addressing a letter to the property management company which trickles down to the tenant which trickles down to the guy to make himself scarce) if the guy is connected to someone renting in the building, particularly if you know which apartment and what the name of the the tenant he is hanging with is. This guy sounds very much like he will disappear quickly the more you can do to make him not feel anonymous on the block. Heck if can come up with a real good detailed description you could make an anonymous flyer and slip it under every door on your block. Word will get back to him to find a new block to hang out on. Hell just make one flyer and put it up on the telephone pole by Vina's. Word will get to him.

That's your goal - to have the piece of mind to know that the guy is not going to be hanging on your block again next time you come home.

Hey Sean and all,

Sorry about lack of clarity and details, I'm still a bit on the frazzled side because of all this (and thanks to everyone who has written in with support and such).

The perp wasn't on a porch as far as I can tell, he was walking down (south) on 49th while I was walking up so that was a lack of clear writing on my part. The porch had to do with someone coming out of a house to break up what they though was a street fight (thankfully.)

A better description: medium complexion, probably around 150-180 lbs about 5 foot 10 or so, afro-ish but close to the head hair, short goatee or beard, a bit of grey sprinkled throughout his hair, wore a blue coat (pretty sure it was dark blue). If you get close you can tell he's messed up - but of close i hope the next person that gets up close will help to nab him.

I'll be talking to the gent who posts as The Fuzz tonight, will talk to the block captain soon. Looks like if I live here I'll have to change my introvert who likes to schedule his social time ways. (i meant to have the smiley inserted here at my lame joke not at the subject header, oh well...)

Hi everybody.

I was standing on my porch today at 3:30 pm when I saw about 7 or 8 kids
with West Philly High uniform shirts running around pretty wildly.

The 2 or 3 of them in the lead then ran across the street, and absolutely
clocked this 40-something guy from behind for no reason at all. I have no
reason to believe that they knew him, and they didn't try to take anything
from him either. They ran away right after they hit him, but they did some
damage, to be sure.

I'm 99% sure that they were just out to crack him in the jaw for kicks --
either break his jaw or knock him out with one punch.

And I should know, cuz the same thing happened to me about 3 1/2 years
ago in front of the Penn Dental School in the 4000 block of Spruce Street.

The guy was literally lying in a small pool of blood by the time I got across
the street, and he wasn't at all in his right mind after it happened. He
basically got knocked bloody and silly.

One guy in a car stopped to help, as did another woman who called 911.

He got medical attention, thankfully.

And so this is just a standard reminder to be careful out there and to
be conscious of your surroundings while you're walking around.

This guy never saw it coming (since they hit him from behind),
and so he never had a chance, but still -- keep
your eyes open and your wits about you out there, folks.

Not that kind of beard and skull cap. Just a regular beard and the kind of skull cap you wear when you're cold (those are called skull caps, right?)

hi all,
sorry to read about the crime/ violence. it's really disheartening. a neighborhood friend just emailed the following:

"...on a worse note, a neighbor told me that this afternoon, 3:30 or 4:00 pm. a group of 8 or 10 black fellows attacked a white man and beat him severly somewhere near St Francis church."

she couldn't provide any additional details.

let's be careful out there.
