Not that I am going to wade into the question of what dividing lines to superimpose on the neighborhood for purposes of tracking crime patterns. Personally I think that what happens anywhere in the 18th is relevant to all of us.

When I do these crime reports, I will do so from home not work. It won't hamper my investigations in any way.

Did you think we had internet access at work? HA!

Wait...seriously? None!? I think what you're doing by being such a presence on this board is really incredible, and the fact that you're doing it on your own time is just above and beyond. But you should be getting paid for it. What you're doing is a kind of community policing. Virtual community policing, I guess, but all the same. You're coming into contact with a citizens on positive terms every day. I hope you can find a way to get more credit than just a PW article. And I hope you start getting more institutional support. Are you reading this, Michael Nutter?

Yes, exactly, The Fuzz is going above and beyond, and my concern was just to make sure that we are not piling on even more things for him to do. Definitely not criticizing him for doing the extra things, just hoping to preserve his ability to, like, sleep once in a while!

Personally, I like the element of surprise, regardless.
I dO thInK people do Think (or whatever combo of caps you'd like to see) about this soft of thing. Granted how much they think depends on intelligence, but every risky behavior has a risk-assessment phase... Even the dumbest criminal is going to make a risk assessment before committing a crime, otherwise something like the granny squad would be pointless. If criminals preyed equally on the weak and strong, there would be no need to dress people up as the elderly, or the homeless.
I think advertising this kind of police work would raise everyones risk-level.

I prefer prevention to 'surprise' and arrests.

Seriously. None. My email account is my own. I don't complain because I like coming on here. I like meeting and helping the people on this board. I don't need to get paid for it. I don't need credit. This is what I signed up to do. The only thing I want is for the residents of of my division to feel safe and to know I will be there to help them if they need me. That is what being a police officer is all about. Going to Chuck Cassidy's funeral today solidified my beliefs. To see a city unite like it did today was unbelievable. The kind words and actions of the citizens of Philadelphia all week have been overwhelming. It just makes me want to continue to help people as long as I can. It may sound cheesy but this is what I love to do.

So thank you for the kind words Andrew...and I am sure Mayor Nutter will do his part to improve our work environment.

So I sat in my friend's cruiser from Montgomery County, MD tonight. What a sweet ride! Talk about cruiser envy here. Mounted laptop IN the car, with a wireless internet card and a GPS system, good radio controls, the whole nine yards.

We are so behind here.

I forgot to add this to my last post so.....

I just want to say thanks to the residents of Philadelphia for what they have done over the past week. The support, prayers, and kind gestures have been unreal. Sometimes police officers get into a rut and feel that everyone is out to get them...media, judges etc. It's sad but it takes something like the death of Chuck Cassidy to make us snap out if it and come together.

I am proud of my department and the citizens of Philadelphia. I feel a change coming. Something good. The election of Michael Nutter brings hope. The death of P/O Cassidy, while tragic, showed the lengths people and police will go to bring a murderer to justice. Together I think we can change this city. It's happening now. People are sick of crime. Police officers are sick of crime.

A change for the better is coming.....I feel it.

If I am totally off base, please, let me know. I would love to hear how you all feel.

Perhaps an article in the PW or City Paper about the robberies and other related crimes in UC might be helpful...

Fuzz, in light of last week's events I just want to express not only my condolences to you and the other officers but my deepest gratitude for the work that you do. I think we are very fortunate to have your presence here on PB and in the community.

Growing up I didn't have great experiences with cops because where I came from people (read: rednecks) went into law enforcement primarily for the power trip (read: guns) not because they were interested in protecting people. Now that I am a little older I understand that there are most definitely good cops and that you are clearly one of them.

Thanks for your service.

I too am very hopeful that things are going to turn around for the better in Philadelphia.
