The Fresh Grocer delivers (for free, I beleive), if you don't mind having someone else pick out your food.

The Larchwood blocks are really quiet; the 48th Street side has bigger and prettier houses (esp. just south of Larchwood) but more foot traffic and noise from the buses.

Farmer's market is Thursday afternoons and Saturday mid-mornings in Clark Park. It's awesome, especially in late summer/early fall, when stuff is really coming ripe.

I hope/think you'll like this part of the neighborhood. It's not as fancy as some, but is really nice and home-y.

Our block is filled with friendly people. Some of them have lived here for a long time, and some of them are new in the last couple of years (me included). We all watch out for each other, but no one I know on this block has had a problem of any kind in many years. - pjm49th

I am one of those folk that live in the area... I agree that 50th is probably the cut off for the whole U.City area. The neighborhood is pretty decent. I haven't had any difficulties as far as walking at night or anything like that.

The Fresh Grocer & the Supreme will give you a free ride home with your groceries if you spend more than $40 (although I've never had the driver check my receipt). You need to have a car seat for a baby, though, which may be a problem for the OP.

The Clark Park farmer's market is okay for an urban farmers' market, but for selection and price I much prefer the produce truck parked at 44th and Walnut.

I really like the block I live on and all (50th and Catharine) but the high 40's and Larchwood/Osage/Hazel are some of the more beautiful blocks in the city, imo. those tree-lined streets are magnifiscent.

I concur with what most have said. if you are aware and realize that you do live in an urban environment, after all, you'll be fine.
