thanks again for all the great advice and input! i spent most of my first day walking all over the area, and i think that the rumors of its sketchiness are greatly exaggerated. sure, there were a few blocks where i definitely felt like the neighborhood was looking at me, instead of me at it, but 90% of the area up to about 48th seemed totally fine to me.
the building on 45th and baltimore is that corner apartment next to the former (current?) frat house, right across from the sunoco. i wish i could give more information about it, but i didn't actually get the chance to see it while i was there - it was a total runaround even before i left san francisco! first, no one returned my emails (one week ago). then, no one returned my voicemails (two, sent four days and one day before i left california). when i finally got someone on the phone, they gave me another name/number to call. that person, in turn, gave me a third contact, who finally felt it appropriate to share with me that "the unit is being remodeled and won't be available for viewing until may 20." sheesh. anyway, it all worked out alright - i ended up finding an amazingly sweet place out in chestnut hill (!). kind of a trek into the city, but that's no worse than taking the bart into the city from oakland or berkeley ... |

The building at 45th and Springfield Ave is actually a wonderful building! I have lived there for a year now. This might be the same apt that "svtcab" was looking for. He must have been late to get this one! I had to jump at it: there were so many people interested. At the open house, there were 5 applications on the apt. Probably because of the reasonable prices! My apt has Hardwood floors, newer kitchen and bathroom with all new bay windows with beautiful views of the park. Clark Park is really nice- waking up to the smells of the woods and running to get my caffiene fix at Green Line Cafe every morning! Can it get any better? Yes. The management is great as well. 24 hours on call. Where can you get that?
It is very safe- speaking to the girls who have lived in the building for a few years, no issues ever for them or anyone they know. The so-called frat house next door has been cleaned up over the year. The people in that building are very quiet and restpectful. It is owned by a private owner- not university owned. The flag of USP still graces the porch- Is it school spirit? Can they not merely love their school? I do not hear any noise. I feel it is the hustle and bustle on the streets in front that guarantee more traffic, and probably the reason why I feel safe. I definately recommend the place!
