Default Teds Pizza

I used to be a Powelton Pizza man but since I tried Teds there has been no going back. Teds has a crisp crust that tastes like it has been brushed with butter. The cheese is far more interesting than anywhere else. It is greek style like Mad greeks and Mad greeks is good but I think it is even better. I have introduced friends to their pizza and everybody agrees that it is awesome.

but not in UC.

We have been ordering more form Fiesta these days. We used to order almost exclusivley from Varsity, but after their ownership change the taste of the pizza changed.

The Best House at 43rd and Baltimore has some pretty tasty pizza. Less greasy with better sauce and crust than Colonial, and costs about the same: their large cheese pie only sets you back around $7.

On the advice of GPD in this thread I ordered from Gourmet Pizza on 57th and Woodland tonight using CampusFood. I ordered a "Louisiana" (Louisiana hot sauce, chicken breast, sausage, black olives, and fresh sliced onions) and a "Special Combination" (Pepperoni, mushrooms, bacon, sausage, Italian sausage, onion, fresh green peppers, and black olives). It's really good! I had been going with Best House for a while (I really like their hoagies/grinders), but the last time I ordered pizza from them it was pretty weak. I'll definitely order from Gourmet again next time it's a "pizza night."

Colonial now has an XL pie because apparently some people complained that the large was not large enough. This one is pretty huge.

PennEngineer, Glad you liked that place. We've also tried one of their white pizzas and thought it was good and garlicky.

All the places I have been to so far in the area have sucked. It seems as if some places use some sorta pre-made pizza where they just throw it in the oven. The only places I've tried so far which I remember the names are Penn Pizza, Allegro and Fiesta and they all had sucked to my standards so far.

Rustica is pretty good if you don't mind going that far--it's on 36th and Chestnut.

JonB, I read in one of your other posts that you are from NJ. I, myself, am from North Jersey, and I thought the same thing when I moved to UC, 13 years ago. The pizza is terrible. One thing you have to understand is that in Jersey (at least in the NY metro area where I come from) Italian pizzarias are a dime dozen. Most of the pizza shops in UC (and Philly for that matter) are not run by Italians, so the pies are not prepared the way we are used to. In fact most of the proprietors are Middle Eastern, and they cater to the college crowd by providing cheap food and delivery. During my years as a college student I learned to embrace this style of pizza, and found a few places that actually make a decent pie. I would try College Pizza, Powelton Pizza or California Pizza.

As for the authentic NY/NJ style pizza you are probably used to, there are a few places you can try (although none are in UC). There is Lorenzo's on South St., The Couch Tomato on Main St. (Manayunk) and Mr. P's on Ridge Ave (Roxborough). Or you can always take a ride down to South Philly and try any number of Italian pizza shops. Marra's on Passyunk is good.

D-Man,

What part of North Jersey are we talking here? I lived in Jersey City/Bayonne until I was about 11 then my family moved to the Poconos and I recently moved to Philly in August for school (Temple). I'm 22 now so go figure.

The place on South Street I actually did go to when I was apartment hunting/tourist sighting this summer when I was in the city. I remember, big slices a pretty good. But unfortunately I haven't gotten the chance to be in that area yet althought I really want to! I'll try out College Pizza next tho.
