Subject: [UC] All talk, no pizza party?

Ok, everyone who said something about eating the best pizza, and their opinion.... I CHALLENGE YOU!

Next Monday night at 7 pm(October 4th) I will host a small get together to decide on which pizza place (that can deliver to my house)is truly the best. Who's invited? The first 20 people who reply to me. We will then have a blind taste test, and with a majority vote (no electoral college invited) determine which pizza is best. I will take all suggestions to where to buy the pizzas. Depending on how many pizzas, I figure 5-7 different pizza shops and two large pies each should cover it, we may be talking a $5-$10 charge/per person for entry to my abode. I probably can provide plates, cups, napkins, etc...if someone might be willing to bring the sodas, juice, etc. I can filter some water and ice, too. No beer, sorry. Alcohol might change your mind midway through.

The race is on!

A friend of mine who's on the list sent me the results. Apparently Allegro won, with Colonial second and the rest all bunched up in the rear.

Personally, I think Allegro's "okay". I've tried, and don't like, Colonial. If the others (Accu, Fiesta, Varsity, etc.) are worse than Colonial, than God Help Us.

I think U City could stand a *good* pizza place west of 40th, say.

#4 4.05 Fiesta $13.75
#5 4.75 Royal $14.98
#6 4.85 AccuPizza $15.40
#7 5.05 Papa John's $16.04

This was a blind tasting -- pizzas were labelled A through G with little flags on toothpicks. Tasting was more or less simultaneous over a period of 90 minutes. Rating was on a scale from 1 (best) to 7 (worst). There were 20 raters. Average rank is given in the second column. Price is for two large plain cheese pizzas, including tax but not tip.

Dan Myers organized and hosted the gala event.

ABC News mistakenly predicted Royal the winner on their evening news programme before the testing actually began. Paper ballots have been impounded pending appeals and legal challenges.

Sample ballots with comments will be scanned and available in the near future.

I was told, after the fact, that my vote (the last one in) was the deciding factor between Allegro and Colonial. I believe since I was the host, and knew which pizza was which, my vote shouldn't be counted. Also, I ate cold pizza, which might turned the results if I had eaten them hot.

However, seeing that this debate might continue because of untested pizzas, I think the quest is still on...who's willing to step up to the plate and host another tasting....I would help with planning since this one went so well.

And I did make another mistake---I forgot to hand out menus of the places we tested...anyone want them? I have 20 of each.

I rarely get pizza in University City because nothing in this neighborhood can compare to Gianfranco's in Old City near my office.

Nobody mentioned Royal Pizza at 42nd and Baltimore, which is my favorite - good red sauce - and I have had it delivered as far west as 50th.

What do people think of College Pizza at 39th and Walnut? I haven't had their pizza, but just tried their Italian hoagie, which was pretty good, actually.

What do people think of Village Pizza @ 32nd & Powelton? How does it compare to all those other places?
