Default Sadie Alexander school -the skinny?

Ok, everyone is real quick to boast about how excellent this school is. It is excellent, no doubt.

Its a K - 8 school with 500 students. Thats a small school, very small. Sooooo, what are the odds of getting your kid in this school?

If I had kids and couldnt afford private school I would have 2 options:
1. move to teh burbs for a good public school system (through high school, not just 8th grade!)
2. send my kid to Sadie Alex.

If #2 had a 50% probability, #1 would look much more attractive.

Whats teh skinny?

I just checked this page out.

http://www.phila.k12.pa.us/schools/p...admissions.htm

It clarifies things a little. I guess there is a limitation to the number of students who can attend.

So how many kids who live in the catchment zone are turned away for being late at registration I wonder? A few, a dozen or so, a couple of hundred?

No I live west of the catchment zone. If I had kids they would by default go to Lea. I deleted my post because I was under the impression that Sadie Alexander was still adding classes one year at a time as the first group of kids graduate but apparently they have all already "phased-in" to a full K-8 according to the website.

Don't forget that there are other very solid grade schools in Philly. A lot of my friends have been happy with Powell middle school and a friend who grew up in Philly went through a public grade school in Northern Liberties which he raves about.

At least some parents in my area send kids over to Powell in Powelton Village as a more desirable public than Lea, from what I understand.

That issue has been way overblown. It is a problem for Kindergarten and not for the other grades. Besides, I believe they are moving the Kindergartners to a building adjacent to the Penn Alexander/PIC complex. PIC announced to parents that there would be construction for this purpose a few months ago and that their limited parking would get more limited in coming months.
