Default UC residents and how they commute

that's cuz you all work at penn damnit. 25% of the city is employed outside of city boundaries which seriously diminishes our ability to walk. and some people have to walk through abandoned lots to get to their transit stops.

But does it diminish your ability to take mass transit? I have little sympathy for people who work in the burbs ...

Yep. MT is not an option for me. Fortunately, sympathy is not needed as I am more than happy with my job in the burbs. Of course, it did take me an hour an 15mins to get to work this morning....damn road closures.

Dumb thing from Andersen #277645

People work in the burbs because there's a lot of jobs in the burbs, not as many in the city. I think it's stupid that the jobs are there, and not here, but it's not the fault of the poor schmuck who has to work there.

bg,

MT is not an option for all...depending upon where you live and work.

I luckily work and live in the city and my commute is via bike. However, if I ever had to get another job, I would search in the city, but the job market isn't necessarily healthy enough to limit yourself to one area.

You sound elitist with the "little sympathy" comment.

Yes, I've talked to a number of people who would desperately love to work in the city if there were any jobs here to be had, but have to reverse commute out to the burbs because there's no real choice.

The city's economy isn't healthy enough to make working in the suburbs a lifestyle choice - many do it because the only alternative is leaving Philly altogether.

I've been accused of worse ... ;-)

Seriously, I didn't mean to be flip, but I was trying to fix this thread after it was gutted by Archeologist ...

I don't really believe that people should live close to their jobs and not commute long distances ...

Where should the blame be laid? My vote is on the state for allowing unchecked growth in the 'burbs causing a whole set of problems, from the decay of Philadelphia, to enviromental degradation.

To paraphrase (and clean up) a quote from Wesley Snipes in BLADE, some dummies are always trying to iceskate uphill.

Next time, try this: "You're right, that was a dumb comment. Sorry." See how easy it is?

It is probably poor urban planning at a state-level. Again, though, that's hardly the commuter's fault. Would YOU go to Horsham if you didn't have to?

I chose a job in the burbs, and I pay wage tax. My car and bike were registered in the city the day I moved in. Unfortunately, I can not find a job in the city that will pay me what I want...so I was forced to look in the burbs.

Wait... you blame the state for decay in Philadelphia?!? I don't understand and would appreciate an explanation.

I blame the city for most city problems. Pay-to-play mentality, corruption, even residents who refuse to vote out the above, let the unions run the way things go, etc.
