Default SS United States: Lady in Waiting

Did anyone else see the documentary that aired on WHYY the other day? We DVR'd it & just watched it tonight. It was great. Really fascinating.

I just looked it up at http://www.whyy.org/tv12/atoz.html & see it's being aired again tomorrow night, in case anyone else wants to catch it...

I'd love to see that - thanks for the heads-up!

That documentary was excellent. I had no idea about the ship's history, both from the national-pride point of view about being the fastest ship ever, and its "E! true hollywood story" sort of history about sailing with celebrities and movie stars.

I definitely recommend that people catch the program on Channel 12 (and I think Channel 23 is airing it also).

It's a wonderful ship. I keep fingers crossed daily that it can be saved, though I was dismayed to hear the figure for rehabbing it is now up to $500 million. Last I heard it was a mere $250 million.

For those with Comcast HD, it is being broadcast on the WHYY's HD channel as well - 240.

I think this is an old documentary - my father in law saw it a few years ago and has been wanting to see the ship ever since.

It's funny, the only reason we caught the documentary was because we searched for it after my father-in-law from Scotland, who is visiting right now, noticed & inquired about the ship when my husband drove him down to Best Buy to get a new camera. I knew a little bit about it but he seemed really fascinated so I did a search & voila. The documentary might be a little bit old, but I don't think more than a year or two. In fact if I recall correctly I think a date in 2006 might have been mentioned. It's really a must see. (And yes, in HD.)

I saw the documentary. I got the impression it would cost significantly more than 500 mil. The head of Norwegian Cruise said there is a chance the ship could be rehabbed but he would not bet on it.

The ship isn't your typical ocean liner. It was secretly commisshioned by the navy. If there was ever a WWIII the ship could carry 15,000 soldiers. It is twice as fast as a typical love boat. The engines are unique and they don't have anyone with the current skills to even work on them.

500 million!!! What do new ones cost?

I wonder why they just don't sell it for scrap.

I subscribe to a mac newsletter, and there was recently an interview with the director of the documentary about this ship:

http://www.macworld.com/article/1327...fcpmovies.html

If you want to go up to it I wouldn't recommend guerilla tactics as there are more than a few armed guards in that facility which you can't see until its too late.
