On the East Coast not a big deal, but there is a big market for California to Hawaii. So in theory if the ship was refurbbed it would be deployed on the CA to HA routes, without having to hit other places.
But wasn't the United States in fact built in this country? I thought I remembered reading somewhere it was built in Newport News or somewhere in that general vicinity.

I'm a big fan of the United States, since it's the ship my mother emigrated to the US from Germany on in 1960.

Default Correct

Exactly that's why the cruise line is keeping it lying around. Because it was built here it could travel from point to point in the USA without the foriegn stop overs .....

YOU WROTE,

SS United States

Anyone that's been to the Ikea on Delaware Ave (ok, Columbus Blvd) in South Philly has to have noticed the SS United States. I'm dying to get aboard and explore and wondering if it's possible to sneak on the ship. Any thoughts, suggestions?

Actually I was on that boat and it WAS real and believe me
it was spectacular. [ /Seinfeld mode ]

Do you think he requested a rescue, three years in advance, so long as it isn't on a weekend, federal holiday, or other designated day of special commemoration, in triplicate, on official stationary, notarized, and offer details of what would be involved in the rescue, the kind of equipment that would be needed, as well as number of personnel that would be requested? If not, Street's outta luck!

best moment ever in my life involving the SS United States = Joey Sweeney's Trouble with Sweeney Booze Cruise aboard the Captain Lucky... they went past it on the way out... and then on the way back to dock, we stopped in there a bit, TTWS played a cover of "God Save the Queen" ... it was dark, beer was a-flowing, NO FUTURE... right on.

Very cool if it happens, although I will miss it on the horizon.

A grand ship may sail again:
