If you don't mind hiking or boating to your site, try Round Valley in NJ. It is about as hour and 15 minute drive. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandf...rks/round.html
If you book a site over the phone, they charge you for 2 nights even if you are only staying for one. i usually just book a site when I show up and i always seem to find an open one. Be aware, you cannot pull a car up to the campsite. You need to either boat or hike it. The parking area is 3-6 miles away from the campsites. In my mind, that is a great thing about the park, it helps keeps the loud crowds away. I was there last weekend and it was very nice. The water is getting warm enough to swim. |

We really like Locust Lake, which is a small state park off I-80. It's a bit further than 2 hrs, though - more like 2.5.

Perhaps it's a bit longer drive 2 the Adirondaks , but it's well worth visiting the area known Lake Durant... which is near Blue Mountain. Several campgrounds and they're off the hook. Exit 21 New York Stare Thruway. In 2001 during late July we were on Tour ... Phil & Friends / Ratdog and campin ' there when the shows were at SPAC. Black bears awoke us like 4 a.m. ... don't leave food out on the picnic tables. The Earth was travellin ' thru the Asteroid belts .. millions of shhooting stars all night for several nights... outta this world !! And the Dead shows wre Phat !!! A week or so later we camped at Lackawanna on the way towars Hershey. That was o.k. too, but pales in the eclectic and natural experiences of the Adirondaks. This summer I'm likely headed back to California... Mendo ...Monterrey... I don't know... when in doubt... Tour !!!! http://www.ratdog.org |

Hickory Run State Park is nice -- Boulder Field is there, and nothing is more exciting than acres of rocks

really depends what you like. Do you like to pull up to a campground in your car and pitch a tent or are you a backpacker like myself? If the latter, there are some good stretches of AT within 2 hours.

I thought this thread would be the perfect place to post my question...
I'm fairly new to backpacking and was hoping for some suggestions on a good place to go. I'm looking for about 7-10 hike in, back country camp site, and then about the same hike out. Would prefer a loop, but an out-and-back would work too. (An A-to-A trip) Closer to Philly is better, this trip will probably be over a saturday evening, however I'd consider further. Thanks -Brian |
