I love looking at mansions. Am I alone with this fascination? Anyone else here familiar with notable mansions in the area? I know there are tons with the venerable Main Line being so close, but what about the extra special and/or spooky ones?

thanks in advance,
M
I wouldn't spend the night in any of these, they'd probably arrest me. You can visit them though, they do tours.

Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion (Germantown)

(Always reminded me of the Adaams Family House)

Ryers Mansion (Fox Chase)

Glen Cairn (Bryn Athens)

Default 4500 Spruce

This was torn down in the 1960's, although it spent a good twenty years sitting abandoned. It's pretty creepy looking even in new condition...

Did Norman Bates live there?

My favorite Philly mansion was torn down in 1980, but you can visit it here: Whitemarsh Hall

If you're willing to settle for looking from the outside, there are some nice mansions in Powelton, especially along Powelton Ave, and in Chestnut Hill.

I always loved this mansion on North Broad Street. It's still there but kinda run down...

the facade of the Wanamaker House is still on Walnut near Rittenhouse although the back has been tastelessly torn off...

and of course, Woodmont, the Gladwyn estate of Mother Divine...

Woodmont in Gladwyne is open to the public, and can be toured on sundays. I went on a "walk" of the property lead by Mother Divine last winter:

I think it's just south of Girard.

The Divine Mission also owned a townhouse at Broad & Pine (The Dundas-Lippincott house). I was there last summer when they auctioned off the contents and the house. It was fantastic inside.

It had been their men's residence. The master bedroom on the 2nd floor had four double beds in it and the room still felt empty!

They still own a number of beautiful houses on N and S Broad.
