Joining a Gym is a great way to relieve stress, meet new friends , and get in great shape. Except for the ocassional steroid induced muscle head , most people that you meet in a gym are fairly personable and positive.

There are Activity Clubs to join for just about any interest you have. You meet people with similar interest which branches off to wherever you let it. You meet new friends who introduce you to more new friends which can create all kinds of oppurtunities for you. Be friendly, always be positive.

A walk through Old City on a fall afternoon beats the hell out of the bar scene anyday.

Gotta agree with all of these, they are all excellent recommendations - but I will say restaurants are no fun if you're alone.

I often find places with a bar so I can eat there instead of sitting at a table by my lonesome... call me crazy.

The italian market is tons of fun on your own, and volunteering is an incredible way to meet people. Joining a gym is an excellent idea, but try it out first - some are total meatmarkets... unless you are in to that thing, though by your lament over going out and drinking might signal otherwise.

If you're not into the bar scene, then, asides from the options listed above, I'd recommend First Fridays in Old City. First Fridays occur on teh first friday of each month. The art galleries all have openings for their new exhibits and people from all over the region come and peek in. There are outdoor performances too. It is a good place to meet other younger 20-sth people.

Activity club are a good way to meet people. If you're into rollerblading, check out www.landskaters.org.

If you are athletic, you can try the manayunk sport and social league: we're talking about it here:

I also recommend the manayunk sport and social league. Isn't there also a philly sport and social league? I have friends involved in one of those organizations, and they play softball as well as co-ed touch football. They seem pretty social...and often head out to the bar together after games....a drinking activity, but still a good way to get to know people with common interests rather than in the regular pick up scene at bars.

A climbing gym is pretty cool and it's a decent hobby that can take you all over the world. There is great climbing nearby, 3-5 hours, in West Virginia.

Mountain biking clubs for women are probably fun, not sure if Philly has one.

Then you can top off a day of rigorous activity with a cold beer. 8)
