Yup - I used to live directly across the street from there and the Restaurant School building back then - when it was an Asian family heavy-metal house w/ clothes on the line and many kids of all ages running around. Sure wish I had more pics from back then. Classic West Philly punk times!

Ahhh. The Chestnut Cabaret.
I was in a band in the 80's and playing the Chestnut meant you had arrived. I saw so many great acts there:
King's X Galactic Cowboys Beru Review (The greatest local band in the world) ELP BB King Buddy Guy Stanley Clark Chris Whitley Buster Poindexter Living Colour The Tubes Jane Siberry The Hooters and Tommy Conwell, of course... And alot of others The other Cabarets were the 23E in Ardmore and the Ambler Cabaret. I've played all three. The Empire Rock club was never a part of the Cabarets. Steve Mountain owned the Cabarets. The Empire was owned by another guy who managed Bricklin and Cinderella. I also saw several great shows at the TLA and the Troc. Best small local club show I ever saw though, was Metallica at the Stone Balloon in Deleware, around 1988.

anyone remember Beer, Fear, and Sneer Night at the Chestnut Cabaret?
Buddy Guy was great there...."Sing it Mother-F&^*#ers". Peter Tosh John Eddie I remember seeing Tommy Conwell there once.... he stood on our table and made goo-goo gaa-gaa with our dates. I never liked him after that.

Memories of the Cabarets
The Cabarets hold alot of memories for me. I use to see my buddies, NRBQ, there all the time. When the Chestnut closed they went from playing Philly 3-4 times a year to disappearing for nearly two years. It hasn't gotten better.
I remember seeing Arthur Lee of Love and asking him where Bryan MacLean was. Arthur jerked his head towards the door and said, "He's over there ****off" to which I replied, "You better hope not because he's standing next to your luggage". Arthur cracked up over that one. Another time I saw Robert Gordon and his band walk in. I thought, "Wow, these guys really look like they grew up in the 50s". They had and one of them was the late, great, world's greatest unknown guitarist, Danny Gatton. Wish I knew who I was seeing at the time. Luckily I taped it. Saw Marshall Crenshaw there. The last time I saw him was live down at Elfreth's Alley (sorry about the spelling). He played all over Philly in his heyday. Tommy Conwell plays every Saturday night at the Blue Comet in Glenside for those feeling nostalgic. He will be over in Gloucester, I think it's July 14th at 2pm, at the Twins Bar for the Bill Haley celebration. I remember seeing Buddy Holly's Crickets right after Paul McCartney produced their album. Only 15 people in the place and they did a great show. Also saw the Searchers twice there. Use to catch Memphis Rockabilly, out of Boston, at the West Chester Cabaret. Not many realized there was a branch out there. Best of the neo-rockabilly bands of the 80s. In the 80s I saw most of the original Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen including Bill Kirchen at the 23 East Cabaret. I had taped them at the Tower, opening for the Byrds, in 1972 so it was great to be able to catch the band more than a decade later. The saddest memory I have about the Chestnut was the Byrds-Band tribute with members of the Byrds, the Band and the Beach Boys. It would be the last time I'd see Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke alive. Told Richard how much I liked his singing on "Share Your Love". He hung himself later that year. Gene Clark signed everything I brought including my Columbia Gene Clark 45s. "I made 'em, I sign 'em!" was his explanation. Got to meet John York, the one album Byrd that never tours and Blondie Champlin of Flame and Beach Boys fame.

Saw The Fixx there in 1990 or so. Had a great time! The Cabaret was for up-an-comers but it was also for has-beens too!
Ah but those were the days- small venues, and concert tickets you can actually afford!
