Default Phillies sign Burrell to contract extension

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/5100087.htm

"'I love it here: the city, the people, the fans,' Burrell said."

I don't even know how to put into words how much I enjoy reading something like that.

"Burrell will immediately give $100,000 to the Baseball Assistance Team, which aids needy former players and front-office personnel, and $150,000 to Phillies Charities Inc., aimed at promoting youth baseball.

'This organization has treated me better than I could ever imagine,' Burrell said."

Very classy move, which I applaud.

So, baseball fan or not, are you looking forward to the '03 Phillies season?

Personally, I want to go to a few games this year. I've been to one or two each of the last three years, but it's been tough to get excited about the Phillies. I don't know if they'll win the World Series this year, but they're making a serious effort and because of that, I'm going to give them more support and go to some more games.

SOOOO looking forward to it, I cannot tell you!!!!

I was psyched to see that Pat re-upped, too. He's a great guy, and a solid player - and, as you say, very classy!

Clearly management has made the decision that with a big new stadium, one shoudl also have a big GOOD team!!!

This is very exciting.

I am also glad to see Pat coming back, but I hope this new attitude towards obtaining and retaining good players lasts longer than the first couple of seasons at the new ballpark. The Phillies have had money and not spent it before. Hopefully they are turning over a new leaf.

My hopes as well. If this year's team challenges for the division title or makes a run in the play-offs, it should help their cause.

I can't fault the team for making the effort now. They need to put people in the seats when the new stadium opens, so this is their best hope for doing that. I just hope it works better than the Mets efforts the last few seasons.

If we aren't better than the METS, than we should just pack it in and quit altogether!
