Recently the Detroit Lions fired their head coach, Marty Mornhinweg, when Steve Mariucci, the former coach of the San Francisco 49ers was fired. Mariucci has been the top prospect for the coaching job in Detroit for months but cannot simply be hired because of the NFL's recently imposed "minority interview" requirement. This article provides more background, but the question is this: If a team finds a prospect for a job that they want and like, why should they be forced to interview another candidate? Regardless of race, sex, religion, etc. What do you think?

This is a pretty weird way of going at the problem that exists in the NFL of few minorities in coaching positions. It sounds kind of stupid (for lack of a better word).

There are only a 30(ish) NFL teams, typing to impose quotas when there are only 30 head coaching positions available seems really bizzare. This will probably blow up in their faces and be reversed in the next 4-5 years.

Let's hope so. This is the result of another worthless threat by Johnnie Cochran and Rev. Al Shapton. If only we could do without them.

I don't like the whole concept and/or thought process that there needs to be a certain number of minority head coaches, or anything in any industry for that matter, in order for things to be "fair" or whatever.

Especially in professional sports in today's society, teams need to win, now. Unless an owner or GM is a complete idiot (calling Mr. Jones, Mr. Jerry Jones), they will hire whoever is most likely to lead them to wins. It may be idealistic on my part, but I would think owners and GMs would look past skin color, religion, whatever as long as it gives there team a better shot at winning.

It's going to take time and it's not a process you can force. Black, and any other minority, head coaches will be hired when they're good enough to replace some from the current pool. Looking at some of the current options out there, it probably won't take too long, either.

Well said John! It is a natural progrssion that takes place in almost all industries and businesses. As new groups of people get involved, they will rise to levels of authority and importnace as they pay their dues and prove themselves. There are certainly places where glass ceilings are in place and in those cases action should be taken to correct that, but the NFL is not one of those places.
